I haven't checked the weblink below but (I think) this is the answer your
question above: Cats operate more by instinct and not by emotion. They also
operate according to the laws of nature. In the wild, a sick or weak cub is
a liability. The mother cat needs to focus her attention on the cubs that
have a good chance for survival. A sick or weak cub is going to slow mom
down and may also attract predators to the mom and the other cubs. So, her
reaction is to sacrifice the needs of the sick one in the interests of the
survival of the healthy ones. Yes, life is unfair and nature is cruel. But,
the good news is that if a human finds the abandoned kitten, it is possible
to bottle feed with special kitten formula etc and help it to survive.

Thank you. It's still hard. I feel so bad for them. I feel especially
bad when I find dead kittens that might have been saved if I had gotten
to them soon enough. :(
On the bright side, the ones I have found are doing really well, and I
finally got a picture up of the THIRD one ..much smaller than the other
two. So I updated my post:

More cute pictures.

Thank you for posting these stories and pictures. You've done such a
wonderful job with these kittens and given them a chance to live long and
healthy lives.
