I have made the very hard decision to have my Molly euthanized this evening.
She is an Abyssinian who came to us 17 years ago as a stray (believe it or
not). She has been the most loving, wonderful, adorable cat on the face of
the earth and a faithful and devoted companion. But now she has very severe
renal disease. She is drooling badly and her hind legs are weak. Her lab
values are grossly abnormal. I have given her the Clavamox and the potassium
supplements and the subQ fluids but we're pretty much at the end of the
road. The situation is obviously hopeless. This is difficult for me because
she is still grooming at this point and still able to use her litter box.
She did eat a nice dinner last night, but I can see her deteriorating on a
daily basis. Two days ago, she could still jump on the couch. Today, she
can't. Two days ago, she could still come upstairs. Now, she can't. The
thick drooling just began yesterday. I am thinking that with more subQ
fluids, she could potentially last another week (at most), or we may have an
emergency situation develop this weekend when our regular vet hospital is
closed. I would like to euthanize her before she goes into respiratory
distress. I'm sure someone reading this has been in my shoes. Am I making
the right decision?
Best regards,
---Cindy S.

Cindy,
I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. It's such a difficult
decision to make. If she's deteriorating that quickly it might be kindest
to have her euthanized sooner rather than later. If it were me, I'd rather
have my regular vet be involved instead of taking one of my cats to a vet I
didn't know. Again, I'm very sorry--we get so attached to our pets and it's
so hard to say goodbye.

Thanks, Bonnie. I agree. I am going to do it this evening, as I don't think
it would be fair to her to make her wait until she's in respiratory
distress. I realize that what makes this so hard is that this is not simply
about letting go of a very elderly, very ill cat but simultaneously letting
go of the healthy cat that she was when she was only 1-year-old, and
5-years-old, and 10-years-old, etc. She is not just the current sick cat but
all of those other cats. She is the kitten who played blanket games and
shadow games with me. She is the cat that would greet me when I came home
from work everyday. She is the cat that would climb up on the chair during
dinnertime and put her paws on my shoulders. She is the cat that would
snuggle with me in bed every night. She was my loving and faithful companion
for 17 years, and I'll miss her with all my heart.
Best regards,
---Cindy S.

Cindy, you've expressed it so well. I've had to have several of my cats
euthanized over the years and I know what you mean. I think you're doing
the right thing, as hard as that might be. I think it's one of the best
gifts a caring person can do for their pets. You and Molly will definitely
be in my thoughts.

Been there -- done that! Purrs that her passing will be peaceful. In
a way, I regret I didn't let her pass away in her own time. It just about
killed me to watch her (Princess - Siamese aged 16) decline minute by
minute. I just couldn't stand it any longer and took her to the emergency
hospital for the final parting.
Best wishes for whatever you decide. MLB

The deed is now done. The veterinarian showed me Molly'slab values, and they
were very abnormal. She was barely able to eat anymore but she did come
upstairs under her own power one last time. I know I made the right
decision, and I held her in my arms at the end. Thank you so much for your
support. I'm going to miss her terribly.
Best regards,

Cindy, I'm so very sorry. It's just the pits. I know you have many happy
memories of Molly but it's just not the same.

Not quite sure how, I certainly didn't post this multiple times.

Reading this late--I'm rarely on here lately. Cindy, I'm so sorry.
Along with most of us here, I've been through these incredibly sad and
uncertain times, too. You and she will both be OK with the decision,
although you will bear the burden. Glad you got to have her for so many
years. Think on all the good times.
