I have three indoors.  Wendy who crossed our path six years ago (at
eight weeks old) and taught us to love all cats great and small.
Phoebe who we found on the CatNetwork (at 4 months old), skinny and
smelly and figured if we didn't take her no one will (she is now a
beautiful tabby princess), and Stanley who decided he was coming in
(the house) and no one was going to stop him until he got his way (4-5
months old).  Then we have outside.  Igor (old, old tomcat for whom we
starting putting food out) We had Margarita, who belonged to the
neighbor but she ruled the block with an iron paw (she moved now with
her owners), we have Larry, and his cousin Darrell and his other cousin
Darrell, then we have Silverstina, Angel and Blacky.

I have 7 cats, all indoors.  Most of them are cats that we've rescued on our
property from previous neighbors who decided they didn't want to feed their
semi-feral unfixed cats anymore.  Molly is 16 + years, Clover, two sets of
siblings (Tortle & Hailey and Linden & Gollum) and last but not least Sophi.
We also have trapped and fixed 2 or 3  feral cats that we feed outdoors and
help as much as they'll let us.

Well seven is supposed to be a lucky number!  I feel very lucky with my crew
except when it comes to cat boxes and an overabundance of fur!

Per cat boxes..I imagine you mean litter pans? Any way...I bought a toddler
pool and use that for a litter box.
Yes..the hair is something I could live w/o. Must be why we dont get alot of
company.

wow.. I've been dying to know how to introduce another male to the fam.
Do  you have any spraying problems?  Do they get territorial and
fight?  I am kind of new at this so any and all info will help.  :)

Well...there's no "easy" way to introduce any new cat to the family.
Especially when the newest ones are kittens and the others are adults. The
kittens want to play all the time and the older ones just wish to be left
alone.
As for spraying...one thing all of mine are spayed/neutered...but there's no
animosity that way.
Rainbow...she's the queen bee,,,she doesnt like any of the other cats except
Nightshade. She and him were buddies (and still are) before they got invaded
slowly by the others. Nightshade will stand up for Rainbow if Miss Kitty
fights with her..which is daily :(
Miss K. is a friendly one...She just likes alot of attention. As for
smart...I guess so :) All my cats are pretty intelligent :)
Hezabel@pipeline.com - 07 Sep 2006 02:12 GMT
Hahaha!.. you got me smiling here.  That is quite the pride you got
there.  :)  So, is true that if they are all fixed there is no
spraying.  My Stanley (neutered) has been with us for only a bit over a
year.  I think sometimes that he is still trying to find his place on
the house.  He is also very attached to me.  One of those kitties that
are always some 5 inches from you.  So I am afraid that a new kitten
will set him off.  He is still pretty young and has no one to play
with.  The other two girls are older and don't much care for his rough
pouncing and playing.  So I am not sure.. There is a kitty I really do
want, though.

You wont know until you try it...It may be rough for a short while, but
things will calm down.
Oh..Ornery is a little over a year..He gets along "better" with Feisty than
any of them. They are both males.
I think they will do fine. Go ahead! Take another one under your wing :)

I have read, and always practised, until last week, that the best time
to introduce a new kitten into the house is when the existing one is
about 18 months old, not too young to scrap all the time, and not too
old to hate changing his ways, or her ways.

I feel I must admit we only have two....but since spouse is *not* an
animal lover, to say the least, I feel this is a big victory for our
house.  I've had seven over the years, not counting childhood in
parent's home.  Most recently, there was Zildjian (longest-ever-hair
Calico with bedroom eyes and eyeliner too, no kidding) who was not only
almost feral in her final years, but almost certainly half wildcat or
bobcat or lynx or something.  She passed away two years ago at the age
of 13, leaving behind Luthien (elegant dark smokey charcoal and white
harlequin) who had been searched out and adopted from a newspaper ad at
the age of 6 weeks, when Zildjian was 18 months old and consequently
Luthien only knew of life with Zildjian.  It was very hard on Luthien
when she discovered Zildjian's dead body in the garage where she had
curled up one day and gone to sleep under the little daybed in there.
It is now two years since that day and she is still not entirely
recovered as I discovered when I took her to the vet to get diagnosed
severely hyperthyroid (Luthien is now 13 herself), with a heart rate of
240 and a weight loss from originally 12 lbs. down to 6.5lbs.

But much against my better judgement, thinking Luthien not in the least
able to cope with it, I couldn't help but bring home this little
newcomer who was forlornly sitting in the vets office waiting for love.
He is 8 wks. old, and after the first frightened few days, turns out to
be a very spunky boycat, totally not afraid to stalk and pounce on
Luthien.  Now mind you, she gives him a good swat and some nasty yeowls
when he does it, but it doesn't seem to deter him, and, surprise of
all....Luthien has not decided to hunt him down and eat him for
breakfast.  I should have named him Nermal.  His name is Muezza and he
is, at first glance, a black velvet shorthair.  On closer examination,
in the right light, I can see that he has lots of deep deep sable brown
highlights and at the right angle I can see his tabby tiger stripes
underneath.  What a treasure!  The amazing thing is that, perhaps the
combination of treatment for her hyperthyroidism taking effect and
making her feel better, plus the liveliness of the new
kitten....Luthien seems to be returning to her old affectionate self,
not getting high & mighty with me as is usually the case when I bring a
new cat into the house mortally offending the ruler of the roost who
sits in high dudgeon for about a month.  I suspect that secretly
Luthien was still lonely and mourning for Zildjian and just couldn't
get over life without another feline in her life.  So, inspiration came
at that moment in the vets office, and I find that the whole house is
better for it.

And do you know, my spouse was the one who named the new one, so
there's hope there too!!

Can't help it.  This seems such a happy group, compared to the madness
out there!

I only have 1, she's a domestic goddess named Tabitha (aka Big Mama).
She's an indoor / outdoor cat, depending on the climate.
She's spoiled, so I don't think she'd take kindly to other cats
adopting me.
However she does share her food (when she's done) with a couple toms
(Romeo and Fred) that stop by for a snack and keep her company for a
bit.
She will chase the females away if they stop by.

The Ragdoll and MaineCoon mix must be a very beautiful cat...and smart
too.
They are my favorite cats, along with the Ragamuffin.
They have such wonderful people-friendly personailities.
