I thought he was great and knew his stuff and was a great conservationist,
it is strange that he handled so many dangerous species of animals and got
killed by something generally considered safe.

I guess it proves that even things we consider safe can be dangerous if
we're not careful.

One less jackass who made a career out of harassing animals; the
Stingray he was swimming with obviously felt threatened.
Unfortunately, there will be about a thousand intellectual morons to
take his place.

Sorry guys, but I just cannot feel sorry for this idiot.

Harrassing animals? Do you get all your information from the Enquirer?

"Intellectual morons"??? No idea what you mean!

He was a great man, and the so-called "harrassment" you refer to has brought
the world a heightened awareness of the need to conserve our wildlife &
biodiversity. What are you doing about that!?!

Did you know he held a little kid above an alligator once
to antagonize the gator, and then when he was ridiculed by the public he
exclaimed that he knows the animal well enough!

you all get twisted stories... he didn't do it to antagonise, it wasn't like
that at all Kelly, get your sh.t straight.
And Katz, you aren't worth my comment.
He donated his time, love and millions of $$ to animals and saving wildlife,
look into it before you embarrass yourself further. He gave much of his $$
to get the world into a better way of being for animals in general, plus
raising so much awareness in the public,
you two are idiots!

THANK YOU!!

First off, while I may not have agreed with all of his methods, he still did
tos more to EDUCATE the world about the animals, both via his show and the
Australia Zoo (which his father started).

And on the baby-dangling incident:  saw that - he did NOT hold "a little kid
above an alligator once to antagonize the gator", the kid was his own infant
son, Robert, and he was hugging the kid to his body, rather tightly, in his
left arm; while with his right arm stretched way out he dangled a chicken
(or chicken parts) to entice a CROC (not a gator), had released the chicken
and was jumping back as the croc lunged for the chicken, as you can see in
this series of photos:

Lots of these animal shows ham it up for the cameras.  It was not just
Steve Erwin.

I remember one of Animal Cops show on Animal Planet that they did on
the Miami Animal police.  One of the wildlife trappers had 2 small
racoons in the closet to catch.  He had a catch pole right by him but
caught him by hand (Had a kevlar glove on) and in process looked like
he was playing with a kitten the way he rough housed it.  They were
backed in the corner in closet and he easily could have used the catch
pole but had to play to the camera.

It is called ratings people.  I do not agree with it but it is there.

what is with everyone on here getting their panties in a bunch? I was just
wondering if anyone else heard that? I wasn't bashing him entirely. It's
something I head today and obviously it was a rumor. Back off...

Nope  you did not state that  in your other post   take a look at what you
wrote and how it would be interpreted

"Did you know he held a little kid above an alligator once
to antagonize the gator, and then when he was ridiculed by the public he
exclaimed that he knows the animal well enough!"

Never believe or repeat a rumor until you know facts ;)

Also in his native Austrilia he had a huge nature reserve that
he opened a few years ago.

He was not antagonizing the gator.   He was basically teaching the kid
look at the nice majestic animal....but do so carefully.   As
beautiful and majestic as they are they can also be very dangerous.

Reports are that he was not harrasing the stingray at the time.

Ok, first off, harassment is spelled with 1 (one) 'r', not 2 (two).
Secondly, I saw some of his shows; I would call poking and tail
grabbing harassment. The term 'Crocodile Hunter' imply hunting for
'sport'. Crocodiles are mainly hunted for their skins, I have yet to so
see anyone hunt one because they were hungry. Just look at googles
'sponsored adds' (below), they imply that lizards, ostriches,
alligators and crocodiles are something to be hunted to make belts out
of.

>"Intellectual morons"??? No idea what you mean!

An intellectual moron is someone who doesn't possess the intellectual
capacity to see that animals are living beings; they have a right to
live out their lives free of  harassment and interference from human
beings. They are not things, it's or property to be owned.

Zoo = a prison for animals.

If you would have done this in the US, CPS would be all over your a.s.
Give me a f.cking break! I don't care what his excuse was; feeding a
crocodile while holding an infant in the other is NEVER a good idea.
>What are you doing about that!?!

I'm vegan, I don't eat or buy anything that was made from or at the
expense of an animal.

Ooooh! a spelling lesson - I love those. Not that I'm going to go
tit-for-tat, and correct your grammar, because you seem to be beyond that!.

He took the term "crocodile hunter" because it suited his personality, and
NOT because he is involved in making them into handbags... If you interpret
a colloquial nickname to suit your own picture of a person, then I guess you
will have these problems with lots of people.

Do you know the meaning of "oxymoron"??

As others have said, if he picks up a snake, or gets a croc to jump after a
piece of meat, or touches an animal in a way you find offensive, that is
just background noise, and simply your opinion. Are you a crocodile expert?
Do you know what the crocodile is feeling? I'll stop asking questions,
because you didn't see any need to answer the first one.....

You building a house & driving a car is far more intrusive on all wildlife
than anything you "saw the crocodile hunter do"!

An on-topic example for you - Is owning a cat an infringement on its right
to roam the savannah & catch wild mice? Sorry, another unanswerable
question...

My understanding is thousands of people get hit by the animal that
ultimately got him.   Most survive, he was unlucky enough to have it
peirce his heart.
