I will be one of those urging people to get a "buddy" for
their cat. We listened to the advice in this newsgroup and
rescued a second kitten. I cannot emphasize enough how much
fun this has been for our entire family.

They play together constantly. In the pictures it looks like
Forrester, (the tabby), is beating up on Maximus, (the black &
white), however Maximus is almost always the instigator.
They eat out of the same bowl and share the same litter box,
(emptied AT LEAST once a day). They both use the "tree" or a
little circular cardboard scratching mat and are leaving all of
our furniture alone. NO fleas. NO worms. In fact, the only
two negatives I can come up with is one broken glass knocked
of the kitchen counter and the fact that Forrester insists on
visiting my wife and I at 4 - 5 am purring loudly and nudging
our faces and our hands until he gets some neck scratching
and belly rubs.

Great pictures! You are indeed proof that the best toy you can get your cat
is another cat.

Don't pet the cat if he wakes you up at 4-5am unless you enjoy getting up
that early. It is positive reinforcement of bad behaviour. What you need to
do is ignore the cat, even if he makes a huge fuss and acts like he is
dying. When you get up in the morning, give him a thorough petting. Remember
cats are nocturnal - if you don't want to be too, you need to train them out
of it by not playing at night (I would take mine and close the bedroom door
if they pestered me... after only 3-4 days it stopped, and I ignored them
trying to get in)
There is lots of information on cat training if you google it.

Cats are not nocturnal, they are crepuscular, i.e. they are active at dawn
and sunset.
