A neigbour of mine has a problem in that a cat(s) probably is own is going
to toilet in his flower beds in the front of house thus causing a smell.  He
has had to get rid of the soil, for those who live in America I must mention
that the area in question is in UK and where we are located there is not a
great deal of space.  He asked me how he could deter said cats from using
the soil, my suggestions were as follows, put something over soil, tree bark
etc., or fill small bottles with water in the hope that the reflection will
scare the cat.  My grandmother used to put small pieces of bamboo in the
soil so the cats could not squat on the soil, the only thing I ever did that
worked was cover the soil with clay, which is in abundance where I am (very
small area of soil though. My neighbor is not that fond of cats but the rest
of his family are, he is more into growing flowers, has anybody got any
suggestions that I can pass on to him.

Fellow UK poster here. Attached is a link to a good old Cats Protection
leaflet. My sister had a problem with her own cat toileting on her pea
shingle path. In the end she covered the area with larger pebbles.

.
What a lovely site! And so sensible, too.

I am in the UK also. This end of my street abounds in cats, and, naturally,
the small front gardens have become a territorial minefield. Non-cat owners
seem to accept the edges of lawns are prime marking places but lately,
flower growers have taken to using rather smart looking slate chips which
have the advantage of lying flat (ground cover; deters weeds) and are too
large to the moggies to scrape up.

The grey colour also makes a pleasant change from all that beige grit. 8(

Thanks..! I volunteer for Cats Protection at the Birmingham shelter, spent
most of the day today scooping up kitten poop..! How is it that creatures
so small can produce so much, I wonder..?! It's out of all proportion to
their size..! Still, that's why we love 'em..!

Had a couple of older cats go home today as well :-)  Much as I love
kittens (who doesn't..?!) the oldies have always been extra special to me.
