On the stairs that lead to the 2-fl floor we have a set of the wooden
railings that the cats are scratching, is there anything I can do to
prevent/distract them from scratching the posts? Thank you.

Wrap some sisal round them and turn them into proper scratching posts :-)

Yes, make or buy your cat its very own scratching post, then site it
strategically near the stair rails.  When your cat(s) attempts to scratch
the rails, lift puss away and introduce it to its own scratching post.
Encourage it to scratch and say 'Good boy/girl' and give puss some fuss.
This should leave your cats in no doubt where the best scratching post is.

To improve the chances of puss taking to its new post, fix a catnip mouse to
the top or spray the post with catnip.

Make sure that your cats have a scratching post or two that they can use.
Place one somewhere reasonably close to the railings.

To deter them from scratching the railings, put some strips of transparent
sticky double sided tape on the railings where they habitually scratch.  As
soon as they feel the stickiness they will stop scratching and it will break
the habit.  You can get the tape very cheaply from a hardware store.  I have
used it in my living room to stop my cats from scratching my newly recovered
sofa and chairs.

Take them over to their scratching post frequently, and when they begin to
claw it, stroke them and talk the talk!  They'll soon get the message.

Cheers
