Hi Jack,
A female companion would be better, in my experience. With two males, you
may find they fight each other for dominance. This is fine if one cat
yields, but can otherwise be very difficult to handle. Apart from the
fighting, inappropriate fouling often occurs as the cats indulge in
territorial marking. You wouldn't like it. Female cats were made for male
cats.
I have two female cats who get along, but even they have their disputes from
time to time. Mostly, they're fighting over me because they haven't
learned to share me nicely yet :-)
However, since you're starting with a male cat, 2 females aren't an option
for you. Whatever you choose, don't be taken in by the sociable, cute
kitten act. A sociable, cute kitten quickly become a spitting green-eyed
monster when it discovers it's not No. One.
If you do get a new kitten, remember that you will now need two of
everything: 2 pet carriers, 2 litter trays, 2 food bowls, 2 toy
collections, 2 bank balances ...
you'll love it!
Hope all goes well.

Thanks. We had 2 cats, a male and female for a long time. They were a year
apart and got them as kittens. We had the male first. The female lived for
about 13 years. We just lost the male this past Christmas. He was 22. We
missed him alot after he was gone. Well, I guess he's actually still around,
in a container on the mantle. :)
That pair were never really pals. They just stayed out of each others way
mostly. They never fought but they weren't buddy-buddy either. They just
went their own ways.
We got the current orange tabby about a month after we the 22 year old died.
The new one is adorable. And we'd like to get him a buddy. But we we're
hoping they both will get along.
Thanks.
