Hi everyone
Our two cats Rosie & Bonnie have always scratched the sofa and chairs, even
though we have a scratching post in the living room and also a 'scratching
mat' (which is a kind of board thing covered in a rough hessian fabric that
they really like to scratch) in the kitchen/dining room
Recently we had the living room furniture re-covered, with a rather
expensive fabric and my first thought was how to prevent them from their
usual scratching and ruining the furniture. I searched the net and came
across some tape strip that you can buy which is double sided..... but this
was awfully expensive for a few strips. So I went to the local hardware
store and bought a roll of clear (see-through) double sided tape, on a
tear-off tape dispenser at about a third of the cost! I then stuck pieces
of this on the parts of the furniture that the cats normally favoured for
scratching, and lo and behold!.... no more scratching!!! I expected it to
be a lot harder to break them of the long standing habit, but they were
cured almost immediately!
The beauty of the tape is that it is invisible..... and it was a really
economical solution to a problem that's been bothering me for years! I've
only used about 1/4 of the roll so far and they have stopped scratching the
furniture completely!! I know that they have had a go at having a scratch
because early on I could see some hair stuck on the tape, but it was
obviously unpleasant enough to put them off. I have noticed though that
they are using their scratching post and scratching mat must more
frequently.
Cheers
