We have a about 6 year old male cat who has all of a sudden began peeing in
the living room.  This started ever since our uncle has temporarily moved in.
He still goes poo and everything in the litter box, but earlier this evening
we have caught him in action peeing behind the couch on some newspaper we set
out to see if he was back there or not.  What could be his problem?

Anytime a cat starts urinating outside of the litter box, it's time for a vet
visit so they can take a urine sample as he could have a urinary tract
infection.  The symptoms may be urinating outside of the box, possible blood
in the urine (but not always), and sometimes voiding small amounts
continually.  UTI's are very painful for the cat.  If left untreated the
crystals can build up in the urethra until no urine can come out at all which
is an emergency situation; this is especially true for a male cat as their
urethra is much narrower than a female's and the crystals can become lodged
in there.  I strongly suggest you bring him in to your vet so he/she can take
a urine sample asap.

The problem could be the fact that that your uncle is there. Invading his
space.

Cats tend toward inappropriate urination due to either medical or
behavioural problems. It's always best to consult your vet to rule out a
medical problem first, then deal with the behaviour since the arrival of
your uncle. Not all cats adapt well to changes in their environment.

Just my 2 cents worth.
