Hi, i have a one year old ginger and white tom called Spike!

When we first had him he was so cute and adorable i couldnt put him down and
as a result of that he ended up in our room at night when he was about 4
months old.
Now the time has come to stop this from happening because in the morning at
around 6.30am he jumps on my chest and kneeds me to death!!! As a result of
this im woken up and its especially annoying on my days off because id like
to be able to lie in!

My mission is to be able to teach him that he is no longer welcome in our
bedroom. I know its going to probably take a while but i WILL do it!
All i need is a little guidance and a few tips to help me along the way.
Spike is very stubborn and i can tell he's goin to scratch the bedroom door
down when he realises that he's outside on the landing and me and my partner
are tucked up snuggly in bed! How can i prevent this from happeneing!? Is
there anything i can put infront of the door to stop him? Of course, im
going to make him a little bed on the landing :)  I do have to admit that i
spoil him, but this bedroom thing has got to stop!!

Thanks in advance!

Close the door  and ignore him  that is the only way to unbreak the
spoiledness that all of us cat lovers do
Hard love is the only way to do it
it will tougher on you than them

You should have thought of that when he was little.  People spoil their pets then when it
is not cute anymore the pets have to pay the price one way or another.

Is he waking you up to feed him?  Why not just leave a bit of food out for
him at night, especially on the nights that you want to not be woken up the
next morning.  At one year old, it's pretty late to start trying to train him
not to come in the bedroom; he's going to whine a lot if you do and wake you
up anyway.

Lucky you, mine starts this kind of commotion around 4:30 AM. However,
I don't take it lying down stiff. :)

If she is kneeding my chest, one of the two things happen. If I am
awake, I pick her up and put her on a side where she can kneed a
pillow. If I am asleep,  I instinctively turn, which must feel like an
earthquake to her, and she jumps off me.

If she is kneeding my arm instead, I really don't mind and let her
continue for a few minutes.

Either way, soon enough she finds another distraction.

The key is NEVER reward a cat by putting out food or opening a door
when she wakes you up; if you do, that only teaches her to do it again
when she is hungry.

I suggest scolding her in a frighteningly harsh voice if she wakes you
up.  Then ignore her and go back to sleep.  After 2 or 3 times of this,
she won't wake  you up any more.

Wow! Yes! Before I read any further, I think it's only fair to say that
Spike! should, quite clearly, be put down.

Disgusting. You should be banned from keeping pets.

If only it were true.

Curiosity, it is said, killed the cat. But so does a baseball bat applied to
the head.

You are an idiot and you need psychiatric help.

An overdose would *really* help you along the way, you retard.

Here's an idea - why not let Spike! use the bedroom, and you and your
"partner" - what a lucky guy! - can sleep on the landing? Providing you
don't have him put down, of course.

> How can i prevent this from happeneing!?

Have him put down. Problem solved.

> Is there anything i can put infront of the door to stop him?

Lots of things.
(1) Hungry, vicious dog.
(2) Gin trap.
(3) Poison.
(4) Trapdoor.

Of course! Naturally! A little bed! A little bed for Spikey-Wikey!!!

> I do have to admit that i spoil him, but this bedroom thing has got to

Put Spike! down NOW.

That's all part of being owned by a cat..! I couldn't bear not to have my
Missy by my side at night, she curls up in the crook of my arm with her
chin on my wrist and purrs like mad :-)

Ok so I have to get up and feed her, but that's what having cats is all
about..!

one of my cats is stubborn.  he insists on keeping his spot at the foot
of my bed even when i try to shove him off with my feet several times a
night.
