Greetings everyone:

I was wondering if anyone here has had to deal with FIP (Feline infectious
peritonitis).  I had adopted a kitten from a local animal welfare group several
weeks ago.  I already have a 9-year-old female tabby.  After the kitten (cute
little black DSH who my daughter named Alysha) had been in our home for about a
week and a half, I noticed that the older cat, Kenya, was starting to become
listless and not terribly interested in either food or water.  After two days of
this, I took her to the vet who ran a series of blood tests (checked for feline
leukemia and feline aids among other things).  He also gave her intravenous
fluids (which she really loved - NOT) as well as antibiotics.  Kenya made a
remarkable recovery within hours and was back to eating, drinking and trying to
kick Alysha's behind.  My vet feels that Kenya probably picked up something from
Alysha.

Then I got her test results from the vet.  Everything was normal except for her
protein level which was a bit on the high side.  This could suggest FIP. I was
told to keep an eye on Kenya and bring her back should she seem to becoming ill
again.  Well, two weeks later, she's start to refuse food and become listless.
I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow evening and he'll probably run a FIP test.
Unfortunately, these tests are very unreliable and can give false results.

Has anyone else here dealt with FIP.  I know it's fatal :(

Thanks.

what was the titre result?

FIP is very difficult to understand!  eg wet and dry, when it shedding etc!
go to
http://www.gla.ac.uk/companion/fcovguide.htm Diane Addie is the top
specialist in UK in FIP, I would not advise to read just any sites on FIP,
as they are constantly changing opinions on it! most cats come into contact
with FCoV in their lives, not all wind up with FIP....  my advice is if you
have a cat with a high titre result separate your cats, until they both have
a 0 titre reading.  Get rid of faeces out of litter box immediately as they
can even re infect them selves!

If you want to email me, i would be happy to share the latest information on
FIP, I have some very good information...

I'm not taking Kenya to the vet this evening, so I probably won't get the
results until tomorrow.

<chuckle>  So I've noticed. I looked at several when the vet first suggested
this might be the problem.
