Why do cats hate water?

Why do cats hate water so much?  Lots of animals don't enjoy getting
rained on or falling into a pond, but with cats it goes far beyond
that, to the point of an irrational phobia.

All the cats I've owned completely freak if even a single drop of
water falls on them, causing them to take off running then
proceeding to groom themselves to get rid of the wet spot.  It
is like they are traumatized by even the slightest amount of
water.

My last cat HATED the swimming pool.  I would carry her out back
and as I approached the pool she would claw her way out of my
arms and escape.  My current kitty is the same way.  She likes
to look into the toilet, but freaks out in terror if I flush it.
The same for the washing machine.

One of the great joys of life is giving a cat a bath (sarcasm).
I haven't bathed my new kitty yet, but I gave a bath once or
twice a year to my last cat.  I would take her into the shower
and close the sliding glass door then turn on the water.  She
screamed so loudly, it sounded like I was torturing her with
a blowtorch!  I mean, it was just warm water and she reacted
like it was sulfuric acid or something.  After the bath was
over I would dry her off then she would proceed to lick herself
compulsively, as if that would make her cleaner than she
already was.

Get yourself a Bengal. I know of one that appropriated the new owner's dog's
water dish for a wading pool. I met someone at a cat show whose Bengal uses
the family swimming pool along with everyone else.

God created the cat so man could have the pleasure of petting the tiger

Heh.  Are you totally sure about that?

are you sure those are cats, and not.. aliens?? :)  sure, they look like

*grin*  They're Bengals, so yes, they are often accused of
being aliens or little dogs in cat suits.  Bengals tend to love water
because of their ALC blood, though a Bengal does not have to be early
generation to love water.  My boys are probably 10-12 generations away
from an ALC, but as you can see they *love* water.

we have bathed our Persian since she was a kitten.  I think doing it when
she was young helped because now she just accepts it.  But we only do it
like once a year (or twice)

Not all cats do.  I have a Maine Coon named Tommy who is about 26 pounds who
LOVES the bathtub faucet being turned on to a slow stream so he can bathe
himself .  If he hears anyone going into "his" bathroom, he will raise his
fat lazy tail from anywhere in the house, peal out, and race to the tub.
Then (I swear this) he will sit in or on the edge of the tub and say
"Waaaaaw" until you turn on the water.  Then he'll put his head under the
stream, drink, then bathe his head and paws just like a real raccoon.  It's
the craziest thing you ever saw.  He's 9 years old and he also trained my
other cat Ziggy (a mix breed who's about 5) to love the tub too.  He hasn't
taught him how to talk  yet though...Tommy does all the demanding.
So most of the time we have two cats lined up at the spout anytime we use
the "facilities".

Cats do not like to be wet due to the fact that their wet fur can give off a
scent, therefore attracting enemies.
