My husband has, what I think could be, an irrational fear...
he heard that if you neuter a male cat, it grows to be huge... or at
least larger than normal.
Has anyone heard of this before? Truth or myth?
We're adopting a male kitten in a few weeks, and my husband is so
worried he is ready to change his mind!
Thank you for your advice,
Kathryn

years ago i had a non-neutered tom cat...
he grew to be 22 pounds.
my recently departed :( whitecat was a neutered male...
who was 12 pounds or so...
whatever effect neutering may have...is probably less than the cat's
normal variability...so tell your husband not to worry about it

Myth. We have 5 neutered males, they range from 8 to 12 lbs, quite normal.

only way they are going to grew huge is if they are overfed, the breed is
big such as Maine coon, lack of exercise or medical problems

I'm not sure about cats, but a few years ago there was a story that, surprisingly, didn't get alot
of media coverage. It seems the reason Clifford the Big Red Dog grew so large was due to the fact
that he was neutered.
There have also been reports that many of the men who play in the NBA (Shaquille O'Neal, Yao Ming,
Dikembe Mutombo, to name a few) were also neutered as adolescents. Apparently this practice is no
longer in use in professional sports now that Human Growth Hormone (HGH) has been discovered.

Recently on the news there was a story about a large cat that weighed
35 pounds, there was a second even larger cat that weighed like
45 pounds. I don't recall if they reported the cats were fixed.
Both were featured on the MSNBC.

Don't knock it, Kathy. Irrational fears are very often founded on pure
rationality. People like yourself, who disrespect others whom they think are
suffering from irrational fears, are themselves - and this is well known -
often found to be suffering from dementia and lack of pump-action in the
arse department.

It's absolutely true, and I'm speaking from personal experience, here. The
last cat I neutered (over 2 years ago) has now grown to be the size of a
small horse, and is still growing. At the moment it's "paying its way", so
to speak, by being pimped-out, by me, to local perverts who pay handsomely
for its services. Eventually, I'll probably shoot it.

Listen to him, Kath. DON'T NEUTER THE CAT, for f.ck's sake. Instead, neuter
HIM. Let's face it, if the stupid bastard does nothing except whinge on
about neutered cats turning into giant mutant-beasts, you can't be missing
much, you crazy f.cking nutcase.

Seriously? f.ck.

I'd have to say myth. A cat will grow as big or little as its genetics will
allow.
I've heard that many cats, male or female, when fixed will become bigger
mainly because they lack the kitten energy, but again, I think genetics has
more to do with it than being fixed or not.

My male cat is neutured and he is only 11 pounds. Don't know where your
husband heard this but it's definitely wrong. The only way they become fat
is if they're overfed and never exercise. Maine Coons on the other hand can
grow to be quite large (not fat, just large).

My 12 month old female cat is spayed and already a full 11 pounds. If she
gets much bigger, I'm going to have to look into a bigger litter box. She's
not fat, just wide. If she were human, she'd be in a wrestling ring.

Hi Kathryn,
I don't know where he heard this, but it's nonsence. In fact, the reverse
is true - entire males tend to be larger and more aggressive than neutered
males. They also tend to wander further and spray both indoors and out.
Reassure your husband and then enjoy your new kitten.
NB: Please note that once your kitten has been neutered, it may put on some
weight due to hormonal changes. Just be sensible with his diet, encourage
exercise (which shouldn't be too difficult!) and gradually his weight will
return to normal.
