Will benadryl hurt a cat?

My cat has been sounding congested so I gave her some then
began worrying it might hurt her.

Please reply
Thank You

I was told not to give cats human medicine...unless,of course, a vet has
prescribed it. Whenever my cats get a cold or infection, the vet gives us an
antiobiotic just for pets. Check with your vet asap!

How big and old the cat and how much did you give it?

Best bet would be to call vet.

I agree...consult a vet!!!

Even if the medication is OK for a cat...the doasge that a person takes
could be fatal for a cat!!!!

Susan, DO NOT GIVE YOUR CAT BENADRYL.  Benadryl
with humans has high sedative and hallucinogenic
effects at high doses.  And a high dose to a cat
probably ain't much.  Do not do this again
please!!   I know what i'm talking about on this.
If your cat was freaking out and having a bad
trip this is why!  And it's not a pleasant ride.

I want to "second" what some of the others have said.  *Always* consult a
vet before giving medication.  Benadryl is sometimes prescribed for cats,
but you need to have the correct dosage -- think of a cat's weight vs. a
person's weight.  Likewise, *never* give your cat aspirin, tylenol, etc.
They can be fatal!  (And, on a non-medication theme, never give your cat
chocolate or foods with onion.  They also can have a toxic effect.)
