although i have already posted on alt.cats
i figured i should also post here to mention that WhiteCat is no more :(

http://www.plazaearth.com/philo/whitecat.jpg

He was 18 years old and quite healthy until just recently when he
started loosing weight.
He was still doing very well until Thursday, when it became obvious he
was in pain...and we took him to the vet at once.

Even without an appointment...he was seen by a doctor within a few
minutes and he was left overnight for blood tests and observation.
There was really no hope for him as his whole system was failing...
in short, he was just very, very old!

During his last few months...even though he was always spoiled and
pampered...he was given extra love by all three people in this household.

He brought much joy to *many* people and got my girlfriend and I through
some very tough times!!!!

My sincerest condolences. Losing a beloved pet is one of life's more painful
experiences.

Purrs for your loss, we've all been there.

Some pictures of my Sheba, who died last October: www.g6urp.co.uk/sheba

Well I say mine, she was a resident at the shelter where I volunteer, but
in all respects other than actually living with me, she was mine :-)

Thanks for the pix and the thoughts...

And my mind wandered back to my first experience with cats:

I still recall that when i was a kid I did not like cats...
but my parents told my sister she could have one.

I was not looking forward to it becasue I thought they were mean and
nasty creatures.

Anyway...I came home from school and there was a tiny Calico kitten
right there in the hall that did not look too terribly dangerous.

It looked up and me.... SNEEZED>>>

and promptly fell over  :)

Not only did I instantly fall in love with it...
I had to admidt that cats may not quite have been as dangerous and nasty
as I thought :)

I've had cats ever since then!

I have saved  " Whitecat's " picture in a folder named kitties.  He
looked so pretty in his Easter outfit.

We went through this about 10 years ago when our Bruno died aged 19.  The
vet did the biz on our kitchen table, and Bruno's planted outside our
kitchen window and comes up through the lawn as crocuses every year, which
cheers us up in the Spring.

More to the point, we got a lovely pair of 2-month-old kittens last
September:  He's a handsome B&W, she's a very cheeky inquisitive fearless
B&W, and extremely loving and affectionate with the biggest purr I've ever
heard.

We came home around 7 pm three days ago, it was quite dark, and found our
little girl laid by our front door.  She was the kind of cat that was always
pushing the boundaries, straying where she shouldn't go (on other peoples'
roofs, and onto the road).  The motorist who hit her at least had the
kindness to pick her up and put her by our front door.  I guess death was
instantaneous, a hit to the chest, no mess.

She's planted outside our kitchen window now, I'll put in crocuses under the
turf in the autumn.  Her brother is looking everywhere for her, and has lost
some of his kittenhood, but maybe timidity is not a bad thing in urban cats.

Sorry to hear about your loss, I know exactly how you feel.

Thank you for the kind thoughts...

we are going to bury WhiteCat's remains under out front porch...
when he was "outside" that's where he spent most of his time...so in a way
he will always be there

I think it's nice for your pet to be buried where he lived, his spirit will
always be there where he was happy.

Thank you for the reply...

WhiteCat will always be in his favorite spot...

as a kid

The "biz" is euthanasia, in our case on our kitchen table, to spare our cat
the stress of having to be transported to the vets' surgery.  It was a good
way to go, painless, and in the comfort of his own home, dying in his
devoted servants' arms.  We made our decision that it was time, dropped
round our vets' surgery on our way to the pub and asked if the one on duty
would pass by our house on the way home when the surgery closed in the early
evening.  She did.  And that was that.  Our cat died in the home he loved.
