Hi,
I'm a volunteer with a rescue group. A few days ago we took in a mom kitty
who was VERY pregnant. The day after she arrived she delivered 4 darling
little kittens.
It's probably her first litter so she's new to being a mom. Her foster
parent
is concerned because mom kitty is allowing the kittens to nurse but isn't
cleaning them at all. Has anyone experienced this behavior before? Any
suggestions as to how to show her what needs to be done? The foster parent
is wiping the kittens so they can eliminate but it would be much easier if
mom kitty would take over these duties!
Any comments or suggestions would be welcome.
Thank you.

That's simply weird! We took in a stray that was about 9 months old and had
a litter a few days later. She knew what to do. Does the kitty know how to
use the litterbox? Ours didn't at first, but learned. As for the wiping,
take a we washcloth and do it once or twice so she sees it. Kind of like
people Kitties are visual too.

If you object to logging, try plastic toilet
paper and towels.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
She came from a home so she knows how to use her litterbox.
She is still letting the foster parent do the cleaning.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

I only have experience with dog moms and they all seemed to instinctively
know to clean their pups in the toilet department until they started to eat
proper food when they ducked out.
Hmmm. I really don't know what to suggest, unless to put something yummy
(pate, maybe) under the tails of the kittens to start mom off and then hope
she'll continue, otherwise foster mom will have to clean them. I think this
is pretty unusual though.
