after taking a dump, my cat likes to sprint around the apartment once,
as if jumping for joy!

I can always tell when my cat has visited the litter box. She comes
running around like something awful is chasing her.

IMHO It is something left over from "the wild"/ They are trying to get
away from the odor before another wild animal detects it and attacks them.
It's a safety precaution. MLB

i would believe this if cats were not at the top of the food chain.
cats have no predators, so
who are they running from?

Top of the food chain in your house? I am talking about inherited
instinct. Cats have plenty of predators (including people) in nature.

Mine does that too, at the same time as making a howling noise. He
also waits for me to change the litter before doing a big smelly one,
and normally waits til I eat my dinner to visit the tray and scratch at
the litter for ages, charming creature.

that's exactly right. my cat doesn't like to use a dirty litter box,
so he sits
and waits next to the litter box until i change the litter.
immediately afterwards, he dirties it all up.
then he flicks the litter out of the pan as if to tell me it's time for
another change.
