We just returned from a two week vacation.  Now my cats are crying and
howling all day and night.  Wherever we are in the house, they go where we
aren't and make all this racket.  What are they trying to tell us, and what
can I do about it?  I'm sure they will be back to normal in a few days, but
this is ridiculous!

They just want to make sure you are there.  They probably missed you very
much.  Turn on a radio -- talk  -- and perhaps it will help.   MLB

Try the Aniam Channel.  Mine love to watch it.

We were gone for 6 weeks a couple years ago...they didnt whine, but,
followed us around after they smelled us after we arrived home to check as
to who we were. I called them every day so they could hear my voice on the
answering machine, plus I left a message for them. The vet said that might
had helped...since they probably recognized my voice.

N, it's not ridiculous (although it may be annoying).  Your cats don't
understand why you were gone, and they are probably fearful that you will
disappear again.  Give them lots of extra attention, and *not* just when
they are crying.  As someone else suggested, turn on the radio (tuned to a
classical or "easy-listening" station) if you are going to be out of the
house.  It might be helpful to install a couple of Feliway dispensers -- and
be sure to use that (and also the radio) next time you take a vacation.  Did
you use a pet sitter who spent some "extra" time with your cats -- playing
with them as well as feeding them?  If not, be sure to arrange for that next
time.  Your kitties were lonely!

My Grady cat was so glad to see me after I had been away. He would be
so affectionate and happy. Then after a while when things settled down
he would jump at my ankles and bite me and run.

We only had a neighbor come over and check on them and our snake every few
days, but I don't think they gave them extra attention.  Next time I will
also set up some kind of audio recording of us talking and saying their
names.. maybe have the computer play it every so often.  I forget how much
cats thrive on attention, not just food, water, and a clean litterbox  :-)

Yes, please do that.  My pet sitter comes twice a day when I'm on vacation.
She feeds them, puts out fresh water, cleans the litter, brings in mail and
papers, check for any problems (such as food not eaten or a cat that isn't
behaving the same as usual) -- and, perhaps as important as anything else,
she spends extra time giving them attention (petting them, grooming them,
talking and playing with them).

When I come back from an extended vacation I expect, and receive,
punishment. The longer the vacation the longer my pain goes on. Isis is all
over the place, up on my lap, down on the floor, here, there and everywhere
all the while making a racket.

Take your punishment like a man. You deserve it just like I do. <-:
