Our 1 1/2 yo female is very shy. When anyone but my wife and I enter
the house, she will run and hide. After the same person has been here
many times she will venture out but stay clear of them. My son came to
visit for Christmas, and she didn't run and was a bit wary, but even
let him pet her. I know the story that male lions can tell from smell
if a cub is his progeny and if not will kill it. I wonder if this cat
knew from smell, that my son was family. He doesn't look all that
like me. He is my son.and not related to my wife. Any thoughts?

Cats know who is a cat person and who is not
Human beings let off pheromones and animals can read them in a sort of
sense. Example a dog can sense fear

When I have someone over who 1. doesn't like cats or 2. is allergic to
cats my cats
are magenitically attracted to them.
Cats also identify other cats through smell.

Most of our friends are cat people and Gracie is afraid of everyone
of them, My son is more of a dog person. That's why we were really
surprised (more like amazed) that his presence was no big deal to her.
I still think she knew that he was family. The real test will be if my
other son or my wife's son come to visit and it is the same.

My wife save our kitten..almost a cat now from being hut by a phone truck.
Ever since he's cowared when anyone came into the house. The odd thing is
that there is only one who isn't afraid of him. Family, friends, it doesn't
matter, he's afraid of all.

No, they can not sense DNA.

If they could, we would invest $10 in a moggie, instead of $50 000 in a
machine that can do it

I guess a lion costs a bit more. However, since it is fairly well
established that a male lion knows which cubs cary his blood line, and
this ability seems to come from sense of smell. I wondered if the
common cat might share some of the same traits.
I'm still puzzled that a cat who runs in terror at anyone other
than my wife and I, was quite accepting of my son
