Every night I take up our kitty food, because of possums. You can bet
come dark here they come. I can walk out on my patio, & they pay no
attention to me. Last night I did an experiment. I put some cat food in
a plastic Folger coffee container. The possums rolled it , bit it ,
tried to open & finally gave up. They waddled off to the woods. Was
rather entertaining.

We had possums and raccoons in March...the coons were in the attic. There
were only 2 but sounded like a herd of them from down below. We had to get
someone to come and take them away (we live in the city) because I take care
of strays and was afraid they would meet up with them...and I wasnt exactly
too keen on the idea of arriving home at dark and meeting up with the wilds
of nature :-)

careful with possums...
one of them killed a friend of mine's large tom cat!

I agree about being careful with possums, but once they're in a cage, they
are as docile as can be. Sort of roll themselves into a ball.

Possums have claws that are sharper than you would believe. I had one once
climb up my leg - so I know.

Even if you take the food away they will still come around for awhile since
it is on their normal little food route. They are checking to see if you
gonna put any out again. It was almost 3 months before my local possum
stopped coming around at nite. He does still stop at my neighbors house. lol

I don't think they will ever stop, because of the woods around our
house. It is a perfect habitat for possums & other critters. a BIG
possum was checking things last night.

They are ugly, and mean when they have to be. They remind me of those
characters in "Spy vs Spy". So far my two cats have existed peacefully with
Mother Natures critters around here. They hear the coyotes and they come
inside. I have had at night, by the bird feeders, observed a porcupine and
it's young, a deer, a coon, a skunk, a opossum and an Ermine feeding at the
same time. Weird, seems like the just decided to all get along.

It's amazing what garbage people write. I put out cat food and water on my porch
every night for outdoor cats and opossums. Cat coexist with opossums quite well and
they mostly ignore each other. Opossums are in fact quite harmless and are vulnerable
to dog attack and being hit by cars.

I hope so...because I forgot to take up the food for our resident stray and
turned the back light on because our indoor cats were "up in arms" about
something outside...well, our possum friend is back...he took off, I managed
to get the stray cat in for a while..but with our 6 cats looking at her..she
rather had taken her chances with the possum...

While turning around the car in a restaurant parking lot, my lights went
past the dumpster. I couldn't believe it, but there were raccoons,
opossums, and cats eating right next to each other - some off of the
same container. I sat there for a few minutes just watching them. It
was pretty neat because I never would have thought those animals would
be social with each other.

I would think it'd depend upon the cat...If it was a feral or "seasoned"
outdoor cat he may do well...but with Princess and Little Bow and my other
resident strays, I dont think they'd know how to "co-inhabit" with these
critters.
