My 6 month old kitten loves watching the TV close up,  should I be concerned
at his eyes getting damaged now or later in his life ?

the TV is not likely to do any damage
(other than the programming itself)

Does the kitten like watching tv if you are not there. I've found my kitten
and Hobbes (who was a kitten, now a bit past kitten age) would be mesmerized
by tv it seemed, but only if I or my wife were there. Anyway their eyes are
fine.

as long as it's not animal channel, it should be OK.  animal channel
shows too much animal sexuality.

Hobbes was enthralled with the discovery channel! They had a mouse and snake
story line on it...but when the snake was about to eat the mouse, I had to
turn it off...much to Hobbes' dismay :)

TV will give low dose xrays to anything sitting in front of it. Cats lives
are short enough to not see a problem that I know of.
