Cat tongue

My cat has started licking me around the ears and my hair. I've got to say,
she has the roughest tongue. I would have thought a cat's tongue would have
been relatively smooth. I guess the roughness is needed for collecting loose
hair or something.

It feels like she's scraping me with 80 grit sandpaper.

yes
it's sure a surprise the first time you get licked by a cat isn't it?

anyway the 'sandpaper' toungue serves two purposes;

1) grooming

2) lapping up water

You're lucky, my Missy won't do this to me at all. She's very
affectionate, but licking doesn't seem to be her 'thing' :-(

My cat loves to lick my hair as well.  I'll be lying down on the bed and
she will come over to me and begin to lick my hair behind my ear.  She
will also lick my face.  I mean the entire side of my face including my
eyelid.  She even likes to lick my nose and groom my mustache.  The
other day I was carrying her up on my shoulder and she started licking
my hair.  I guess to her she thinks I'm just big cat that needs to be
groomed.

My problem is that I'm fairly bald and for what little hair she licks, she's
mostly licking scalp and her tongue is so rough to the point that it almost
hurts. Not sure why she started doing it. Hope it's just a nine month old
phase.

Because you haven't trimmed them regularly?  No, it isn't fun,
especially with a muscular animal like my little boy, but has
to be done periodically to avoid scratching up furniture and
human skin!

If you do manage to get a proper look at her tongue, you'll see that
the upper surface is covered in tiny 'hooks'.

I remember hearing it said on some TV nature program, a long time
ago, that these same 'hooks' on a lion's tongue could rip the flesh from
your arm should they choose to lick you.  o_O

Just heard it the one time.  Don't know if it's quite true or not.
Perhaps we should send ghoul-cow to find out for us...

Hmmmm. No clue what lameness has to do with top posting.

lameness

n : disability of walking due to crippling of the legs or feet

SNIP

My personal opinion on top or bottom posting is that if the person takes the
time to reply and give me an answer to my question, I don't really care if
it is top or bottom posted. I am thankfull someone just took the time to
answer me. I can always scroll down to read what the reply too was. Unless I
am just feeling lazy. LOL And sometimes I am.

So to everyone on here who have ever taken the time to answer any question I
have asked wether top or bottom posted I say thank you for taking the time
to reply to me and help me out.

P.S. The last post about lameness was not meant as a flame. I just don't
understand what having a a crippling disability has to do with top posting.

My cat loves to sit on the back of my chair and groom my hair. I have one
cat who seems to know when I have a migraine. She will lay beside my head on
the pillow agaisnt the side that hurts and purr and groom. It actually seems
to help. She is a sweet cat. It's when they do things like that that makes
having a pet great.
