Feline pine.  Love it. Period. Exclamation mark, even!

For the most part, I like Fresh Step.  It's easy to find, often times
goes on sale and it does a nice job.  There is some minor dusting, but
overall does a nice job of keeping the smell to a minimum.  I am
willing to try something else, such as Feline Pine... but I've yet to
find it in my area.

I like Worlds Best which is made from corn and is clumpable and flushable which is a big
plus.  Can read about it at http://www.worldsbestcatlitter.com/  You can read what some
people have to say about it at
http://www.rateitall.com/i-29093-worlds-best-cat-litter.aspx

Everyone has their favorite but what it comes down to is what your flealine prefers.  Just
try different litter and go from there.

I had minor skin reactions to two of the clay-crystal combinations I
tried so I avoided those. Tidy Cats crystal seemed to work well but clearly
bothered my kittens paws.

World's Best seemed good until I realized and older cat that got to it
decided to chew on it instead of stool on it.

Eventually I settled on Nature's Miracle litter with the caveat that
although it wasn't chewed on, clumped well, flushed fine, etc. it also
scatters a good bit compared to heavier litters.

I also got a Clever Cat litter box, top entry, which solved scatter
problems and seemed to make my kitten more comfortable (privacy). She used
to go and be on 'a look out' before she'd do her business. Now she just
jumps in, jumps out, and is on her merry way.

I'd get the crystal type.  It's more expensive but last much, much longer.
Plus it's not as heavy as the others, which makes it easier to dispose of.
I'd also get a "litter locker". They have them at Petsmart,  makes it a lot
easier to keep kitty's litter box clean.  I have five cats/two litter boxes
and can go two weeks or more without replacing the litter.  Enjoy your new
baby!

When I adopted my six month old cat, the first thing I did when I brought
her home was to take her out of the transport box and place her directly
into the ready litter tray. I figured the sooner she knew where it was the
better. In the three months she's been here, she's used it every time. I use
Maxxim premium clumping litter.

I have 3 cats that share 2 litter boxes that are cleaned daily.
I use Tidy Cat - Multiple cat scoopable litter, or whatever is the cheapest
scoopable litter.  My cats only issue with the litter is if it isn't cleaned
enough.  Cleaning the boxes once a day keeps them happy enough to continue
leaving little buried treasures for me.
I keep the boxes in the same room as my computer so it is important that
they not smell horrible.  The only time it smells bad is if one of them has
a bad movement.

I thought you had a Littermaid automatic litter box? Are you cleaning that
daily?
Dr.Carla,DVM - 19 Nov 2005 19:29 GMT
I had a littermaid, but I had to give it away because my male cat was so
freaked out by it he refused to use anything while it was in the house.
He is insanely over sensitive to noise.

That's a bummer. My eight month old female cat goes crazy over my
littermaid. I'm sure she jumps into it and pees two drops just to get out
and watch it work ten minutes later. When I empty it or maintain it, she
runs all over the place and plays with the outside walls of the littermaid.
Dr.Carla,DVM - 19 Nov 2005 23:45 GMT
Yes, I loved my littermaid too.  Worth every penny of the $149 I paid for
it, even if it only lasted about 1.5 weeks.
My female cats loved it too.  My one gal used to go in it then wait around
and watch for it to pick up after her  before leaving the room.
If I ever get the chance again, I'm getting another one, they total rule.
Not to be morbid, but the boy has had an adrenal gland removed (cancer) a
year ago, is hyperthyroid (treated w/I-131), hypertensive (on benazapril)
and has HCM (on atenolol).  So he probably won't live to be 100.

I would suggest you pay as much attention to color of litter as with
whatever other features you may look for.

The stuff I use for my new furball is an off-white colour.  The reason
is when my other little guy had a urinary tract infection he bled when
he urinated and it was easily detectable in the off-white colour
litter which caused us to get him into the vet and get the matter
looked after right away.  In the darker stuff, ie, clay, a blood stain
doesn't look any different than a normal wet stain and of course they
cover it when they're done.

Regards

David
