Can anyone solve this puzzle for me?
I have several stray cats that wander in through my catflap. Most of the
time my cats will just lay there and not even raise an eyebrow as the stray
goes over and starts munching on their food.
However, When my sister brings her cat over to stay for a few days, they
fight tooth and nail. In fact the last time my sister and her kitty came,
one of my cats left the house and didn't come back the whole time they were
there. I managed to get him back in and convince him they had gone
eventually.
We always put her food on the opposite side of the kitchen but my cats will
eat hers and not touch their own the whole time which means she doesn't get
to eat (She is huge though so could probably do with losing a few pounds
LOL).

I wouldn't mind the fighting so much if they defended their territory
against the rest of the bloody cats that keep coming in!!!
Thanks
Jenxxx

Or keep her cat confined to a seperate part of the house away from yours.

they let the strays in because they apparently know the strays from their
own wanderings in the neighborhood, and they are therefore "friends".

Your sister's cat, however, is an intruder that comes by every once in a
while.  Your cats never get to see her except when your sister brings her
over.

The strays are probably "invited guests" -- you know the drill:  "drop in
anytime for a snack".  Your sister's cat was not invited by them, hence
the resentment.  Cats are just like some people.  MLB

WOW!! Thanks,
I had never even thought about that. Obviously haven't given my cats enough
credit.
My sister has to bring her cat when she stays over because she lives in a
shared house and it isn't really fair to the other people she lives with to
make them look after her. In fact she takes her cat everywhere with her and
the cat is well travelled LOL

I will bear in mind your comments when they come over to stay for the
holidays.
Thanks

they have it all wrong.

your sister's cat is fat and ugly.
the wild cats are cool, slender, athletic, dangerous wild cats.
your cats want to hang out with the cool cats, not the fat ugly b*tch.

I have already added him/her to my killfile. However I still end up
reading the posts because you and others quote them. The only way to stop
a troll is to ignore them. Don't respond.

Cats are biologically tied to pride mentality. The strays are, whether you
like it, or not - part of your cats' pride.

So, as you allude to - it's territorial. The local cats have been accepted
into the "pride", whereas, the visitor hasn't had time to integrate. Wild
cats share food all the time.
