i have a cat who has a knack for knowing exactly what batch of papers i
am working on.
when I work, i usually read one paper and put others next to me in bed.
the cat likes to
sit right on top of the papers when there is ample room to sit
elsewhere on the bed. and
he makes a big fuss when i try to get him to scoot over so i can pick
up the next page. why
does the cat like to sit on the papers instead of the soft bed?

as always a pleasure edie humperdink. You make me
laugh (most of the time), so i am able to tolerate
you.
Sorry i can't answer your question. This must
have actually happened because this is too off the
wall for even you to think of.
Regards.

He sits on the papers, because, he can. Same as why do they sit on
clean washing not dirty washing?

You should see the reception desk at our shelter. There's nearly always
one cat or another sitting on the papers..! They haven't found the
computer keyboard yet, but I did have to tidy up the rats nest of cables
behind it the other day..!

Hi Edie,
This is extremely common, believe it or not. I'm not absolutely certain of
the reason for it, but my best guess would be attention-seeking. Every time
you need a sheet of paper, you have to almost ask him for it. This gives
him your attention *even for a moment* when you are engrossed with something
else.
When you settle in bed with him to read your papers, scoop him up and cuddle
him and fuss him to shreds. Then tell him you need to read and that he's to
settle down, please. If he settles, tell him he's a good boy. Whilst
reading, stop (at the end of a chapter, say) and offer to fuss him a bit
more. That way he won't feel so shut out. You need to train him to
recognise "windows" in your work when you are able to give him attention.
Just in case he has an additional agenda, give him his own sheaf of paper to
settle on... maybe some scrapbook-quality paper which will feel warmer.

Rexie has always done that. Just to tease him, if he's laying on the rug in the
sun, I'll throw down a small piece of paper or towel or ANYTHING, where there's
no sun. Within a minute, he leaves his nice sunny spot, which he loves, and lays
down on whatever I've tossed down. I can't figure it. I think it's just because
the texture is different than what he WAS on, but who knows!

My Siega will jump on the table just to sit on the newspaper... if a
page my kids have colored falls off the fridge, she'll go over and sit
on that. Same thing with plastic bags!
I'm sure it's not for attention! She knows how to get that! If she's
in need, she'll bring me a favorite toy for me to throw or she'll
bob-n-weave, then dart out of the room for me to chase her.

I love my cat!

Be careful with giving the cat a plastic bag. For some unknown reason to me
my cat /cats like to eat the bag!....Julie

They use fish to make the plastic. The fish smell is what attracts
cats.
And some cats are allergic to plastic.

and believe it or not i had a cat that used to sit
on my homework. Be damned if the cat sit on an
unused batch of paper, nope always my homework.
Maybe my scent or something. Just remember that
since you brought it up.
shortfuse - 10 Nov 2005 00:10 GMT
My cats do that,too...or when I sit down to read a book...Rainbow sees me
and plop, right on my lap!
A friend of mine said its because they want you to pay attention to them,
not whatever else you are doing...remember the saying"Cats rule" :-)

no wonder my cat insists on parading back and forth in front of the tv
when i'm trying to watch.
he never parades up and down like that unless i am watching.
shortfuse - 10 Nov 2005 00:34 GMT
Hobbes, when I am watching tv in the den (there are shelves above the tv)
will jump on the shelves...mind you, these shelves are NOT built into the
wall....I got to the point when he heads for the shelves, I turn the tv off
and leave, and he soon follows behind me.

Because, it wants to be near you.
It's the same reason my cat comes and sits right in from of my
keyboard or on top of my mouse.
Even when I moved my computer, she still comes and sits right in front
of the keyboard because she knows that she'll be in the way.

my cat used to do that until I screamed at him once. he stopped doing
it since.

cat just wants to be certain of attention. Knows
you were working on the papers so sat on them.
Don't yell at your cat. For a troll i actually
like you except for yelling at your cat! And the
post you claimed to torture cats, but i'm not
taking it seriously. Apologize to your kitty cat
in standard cat tongue. Have a nice day.

Whoa, my cat does the same thing!
I'll be sitting at my desk, working on a paper or filling out an
application and my cat Jasper will jump and sit on the very paper I'm
working on. After I move he then "helps" me fill out the paper by
batting the pen I'm writing with!
