Hello everyone,

This is my first post.

I have been lurking for a while. I have a two year old stray , his name
is Yes.  He is a biter ( for lack of a better saying ) no warning etc.
My wife told me he was trouble but I thought it would be alright. Two
weeks ago, yes was sitting next to me when he grabbed the back of my
hand. Spent week in hosp +two operations to make sure infection all out.
He constantly cries to be petted, I know what I am going to have to do,
when I recover from this ordeal. I have picked a spot out for him & am
going to get a coffin for him. It will be real hard to have hi m put to
sleep. Even thought he has cause me a lot of physical pain I still love
him very much. I just want to talk about him .
Yes is black, weighs about 12 lbs & loves to lay in my lap. He would not
let me touch him when I first started feeding him, just show his teeth,
I knew it was all a show as he was scared. Well one day he just came up
to me & jumped into my lap.  I will check in from time to time & hope
everyone has good memories of their pets. I always read the posts about
every other day, even though I don't post. We have several strays, Yes
gets aqlong with one of the kittens & has attacked two others, I guess
it is for the best. Our kitties are,

Old Rainy, Little One, Luvy, Little Blackie & Snowflake. All are outside
except Luvy as Yes will attack her if he can.

Well I better close for now as I have to see the hand surgeon this morn
& need to go to physical therpy to get my hand washed & repacked (
wounds )

regards

Are you sure you have to euthanize him? That's always a last resort. What
about finding a shelter for him? I don't know any, but I'm pretty sure
someone here does. You won't even have to look at him again, the people from
the shelter will "do the work" so to speak.

How old is he and what's his health? Is it due to his biting that he must be
put to sleep?
You might be able to place him into another home/shelter. There are people
who take on these challenges. I once had a beautiful dog that I needed to
home temporarily but he was too aggressive. He only trusted me. I tried
placing him in three different homes, he refused to accept anyone and I was
called to collect him every time. I finally had to take him to the SPCA and
told them he was aggressive, I could not keep him with me due to moving into
a rent house while I was getting my divorce. He was the only one that I
could not find temp housing until I got on my feet. Now there are so many
places and people to help because of the internet.

How long have you had him?  Is it something that an animal
behavioralist could help train out of him?  Euthanizing him should be a
last resort... after you've tried other options.  Check with your local
humane society for a list of trainers, or ask your friends/coworkers.

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you, your family and Yes.

Michael,

Please, please don't kill this cat purely on account of his biting
behaviour.  I do understand your concerns.  I have been hospitalised due to
lacerations from a terrified cat of mine called Cougar, so I'm not playing
down your fears and reactions.  (Alas, Cougar is now dead following a car
accident.)  Cougar's terror stemmed from his being a 4 wk old kitten one
Bonfire Night.  He was consequently always frightened witless of noise.  It
took a lot of thoughtful training to help him with this, but he almost
entirely overcame it.  Cougar was also a biter.  Fortunately, because I was
also training this habit out of him, his bites were much less severe than
they otherwise might have been.   If he hadn't been killed, I know he would
have made a great friend and gentle cat.  He was capable of great trust and
affection, in many ways like Yes is with you.

I'm sure there is a reason (perhaps a trauma) why Yes behaves the way he
does.  To me, it seems entirely inappropriate that he should pay with his
life, when he really needs lots of understanding and help.  Please give him
a chance.  If you feel unable to bear the burden any longer - or you don't
want to inflict this worry on your wife - please take him to a shelter where
he can be rehabilitated.  You obviously care deeply for this cat, and I
believe you will regret ending his life for the remainder of yours.  I know
I would do anything .. ANYTHING .. to have my beloved Cougar back.  My only
consolation is that I took the time to help him while I could.

Please give Yes a chance.
Purrs to you all,
Spider (UK. 26 yrs of cat training)

Well I have found some places that might take Yes. I haven't contacted
them yet as I am not able to handle him because of my hand.  This is
very trying on me as I do LOVE him very much. It seems that the only
thing Yes ever wanted was to be loved & petted.  Will keep everyone
posted on  Yes future. Thanks to all !!!!!!

Thanks for giving Yes a chance, Michael.  It's obvious that you love him and
I truly hope you can find him a good home.  It is such a pity you can't keep
him, knowing how you feel, but after all you've been through, it is
understandable.

Take care and get that hand mended then, please, let us know how Yes gets
on.

You may want to try reading "The Cat Who Cried for Help : Attitudes,
Emotions, and the Psychology of Cats" by Dr. Nicholas Dodman before
doing so.  He tells a story about a cat just like yours and how he had
the owner deal with it.
