Hi,
I'm thinking of adopting an adult cat from a shelter, but would like to
know if anyone has any experience (direct or anecdotal) about cats
tearing/puncturing waterbed mattresses.
I have a hardside (for the uninitiated, it is basically a 5-sided wooden
box, wood on the bottom, and wood on four sides about 14 inches high. In
this frame sits a vinyl bladder about 12 inches high, filled with about 300
gallons of water), which is always covered with sheets, and with a comforter
on top.
Clearly, the cat would have to get under the comforter, and walk around
with claws extended to puncture the mattress thru the sheets, and this
sounds to me to be an unlikely possibility. Or in a fit of pique, shred/claw
the mattress.
Anyone have any information?

Oh - I have a memory ...
Back 13 yrs ago when my ex and I had first gotten married we had a waterbed.
We also had 2 kittens - rascal and squeaky. We had just moved into a new
apartment and were filling the waterbed and the cats got on the bed. We
thought it was so cute how the cats were pounching on and chasing the
bubbles as the bed was filling. (it was a freeflow bed - no baffles in it
at all). It was so cute. (note, pouncing, playful kitties have their
claws extended - its play time, they are trying to grab the bubbles)
That night about the middle of the night my ex thought he'd had some freak
accident in the bed and had wet himself. Nope - when we looked, we had
hundreds of tiny holes in the bed. Patching didn't work. We drained the
bed and bought a new mattress the next day. Thankfully I had wanted a new
mattress anyway - as I wanted to get one of those waveless ones. Good
excuse. :)
Anyhow - we filled the new mattress and kept the cats off the bed while it
was filling. Once the cover, sheets and comforter were on the cats slept
on the bed all the time. They slept with us, and even under the covers.
Never a problem again.
So - you shouldn't have a problem - just a word to the wise - don't let them
chase the bubbles as you are filling it. :-)
