Cat Forum / General Topics / November 2005Constipated and overweight tabby cat.
My neutered cat is now 7 yrs old. He is tremendously overweight ( 14kgs/30lb !) and has been suffering from constipation for the past year and a half, now. I frequently give him oil and when he gets constipated, that is, every couple of weeks, I have to put him on DUPHALAC which eventually manages to soothe him. His stools are always so dry. He eats so much and I can't stand him if I don't give him food - he eats both dry food (Royal Canin Light with RC Obesity, mixed) and canned food, and he also loves tuna in brine. I am so worried about him. I simply don't know what to do. It appears hopeless to put him on a regimen. I worry for him and I know I have cause to do so. Is there anyone who can possibly help me to get a second opinion about this? My vet is the best one on the island (Malta) but I need the advice of some specialist, if these exist for cats. Please, anyone who has been through this, do write up, and write to me personally. Thank you. You follow this with how worried you are, and you don't know what to do. Here's what to do, if you genuinely don't know: Reduce his food by small increments so that he loses weight very slowly, and introduce a tablespoon of canned pumpkin daily, or a half-teaspoon of Metamucil in wet food every two or three days, for the constipation. Monitor his water consumption. If he hardly drinks, get him a fountain, or flavor his water with a tiny bit of the tuna broth, to make drinking more appealing. Forget feeding him the tuna; it is not good for him. As it stands, you are killing your cat. I feed a can of canned cat food with two cans of water, mix well. Then I add two cups of dry food till softened. I use this right now for my 2 fosters. I was afraid they were not drinking enough and wanted to make sure they were well hydrated. I would also cut back on his food intake, if he is not drinking because he thinks he's thirsty you are not helping him you are adding to his problem. Oil is not good for cats, it causes there stomach not to bring in nutrients. You are probably thinking well then he will loose weight, no. He will gain more by the shear fact his body thinks it should store away instead of send away. Have you had a blood panel done? Check if it's available in your area. They don't have a light formula but I find the ingredient analysis to be top quality and it keeps my cats in tip top shape. What I do maybe twice a month, is put down a dinner plate with vegetable or Olive oil in it.All 22 of my cats love it .
