Honestly, folks, is there ANYONE here who PREFERS PetsMart over Petco?
If so, WHY???

I thank you in advance for your thoughtful replies.

Of course, why not? The satellite radio forum is a bastion of
entrenched, polarized viewpoints.
Besides, the XM v. Sirius debate has been beaten like a dead horse.
Looking at the warlock Pendragon's latest rantings, it's obvious that
we've long since hit the bottom of the barrel.

And some of us have pets, right?  So how about it, Petco or Petsmart?

Oh, well...in that case, when we did have pets, we'd stop at whichever store
happened to be closer to us at the time.

Which one has the better gerbils, "did ya goo"?

petsmart, because petco doesn't exist here and the huge bag of cat food I get
is $5 cheaper than the grocery store.

I actually prefer my locally owned pet store. :) But Petsmart is way
cheaper than Petco.

ok I live outside Houston and there is a Petco and a Petsmart 20 minutes
from me. I only go to Petco because they sell the tops to aquariums that I
use for small rodents. The Petco is very nasty and smells like dog urine all
the time. The Petsmart is always clean and is friendlier. So prices do not
determine were I go, but cleanliness and friendliness do.

Right, cleanliness, friendliness and aquarium tops.

But it sounds like the rodents might prefer Petco.

I would not buy my rodents their if you were to pay for them, The last time
I went to get a top all of there rodents smalled to the front door and they
were all sick. No one would even give me a second look when I mentiond it. I
even tried to call the main office and never got through.

When I was in there, I saw this eel-like thing in an aquarium with
these little fishies.  It was neat to watch 'em swimmin' around and
all.  But then all of the sudden, the eel thing opened up his mouth and
quickly gobbled up one of the little guys.  I told the guy who was in
charge of the section that the eel thing was eatin' the fishies, and he
just shugged his shoulders and said, "it's not supposed to eat that
type of fish".

And that was that.

Shadow Walker - 13 Oct 2005 04:27 GMT
LOL, No I house them in aquariums full of bedding not water. Their water is
in special water containers.

For me, it's simple:  There's no PetCo in my area, only a PetsMart.  I would
shop at locally owned shops, but there are few, one is majorly expensive,
the other panders to the "I wanna a pure breed _______" people and therefore
(probably unwittingly) supports puppy/kitten mills :(

There's a third located in the local shopping mall, but it's very small and
always crammed full of kids screaming at the puppies, kittens (most are
rescues, thankfully - the critters, not the brats LOL), and yelling at
mom/dad that "I want _________".  I rarely go to the mall anymore anyway, as
it's on the other side of town, and overly expensive.

The PetsMart supports *three* local animal shelters (our county, the one
north and the one south) as well as various other rescue agencies (there
have been Greyhounds from the Greyhound Rescue in Indianapolis and other
areas).  They have pet training, pet grooming, and have signs offering to
hire a vet for their vet services, but apparently there have been no takers
as there are *numerous* good quality vets in our area (very few are "in it
for the money" as people find out quickly and quit going to them), as well
as a spay/neuter clinic, The Neuter Scooter, and other local services like
that.

PetsMart's service is friendly (for the most part), and most of them are
very knowledgeable.

I have read in some other of your postings that you purchased a cat scratch
post for your kitty and was unhappy with the purchase.  Perhaps your failure
was researching the products available instead of making an impulse
purchase?  And you will find that Petsmarts actually sell different products
in different areas depending upon what products are available and which
products seem popular to their clients.  I have done alot of moving in my
years and have found PetSmarts are different in different areas of the
country.  So you may want to approach your local PetSmart and advise them of
your problem with the product.  If enough clients do this, they will
discontinue carrying the problematic product and find a more suitable
replacement.  Instead of touting the problems, you might try providing an a
solution when the problem is found.  Just a suggestion.

Hi Kristi...

I'm so happy to hear of your wondeful suggestions.  Of course, I'm one
step ahead of you.  I have contacted cat scratching post manufacturers
and retailers, and through these contacts have put together a
Cat-Scratching Post Manufacturing and Marketing Coordination Council
(CSPMMCC).  The idea of this cooperative effort is to ensure:
==>Optimal Design of Cat Scratching Post: A.  Optimal Height: Post
should not collapse on kitty's head during use.  B.  Sufficiently Wide
Base:  Again, post should not collapse on kitty's head, dammit. C.
Durable Materials:  Who wants to repeatedly replace kitty's scratching
post? D.,E.,F., etc to be determined by industry leaders in
coordination with feline product development facilitators (i.e. cats).
==>Quality Selection at all Pet Stores:  Why should the good cat
scratching posts go to Wal-Mart, while a specialized store like
PetsMart sells crap?  (True, as you say, "Petsmarts actually sell
different products in different areas depending upon what products are
available and which products seem popular to their clients":  perhaps
the cats in this area have smaller legs.  The Council will have assign
Cat Scratching Post Taskforce Teams (CSPTTs) to conduct inquiry into
seemingly irrational inventory choices in affiliated pet stores)
==>Government Subsidies to Cat Scratching Post Consumers:  CSPMMCC will
work with your national legislature to ensure that cat owner/harborer
is able to more easily handle the burden posed by the overpricing of
products in shamelessly and outrageously overpriced pet stores.
==>Mobilize cat owners into Cat Scratching Post Consumer Action
Committees (CSPCACs):  These bodies will be organized at the local
level and will express grievances to moronic, overpriced and poorly
stocked pet stores.  In doing so, it is hoped pet stores might be more
responsive to situations and, for instance, Pet Store X might relocate
stock for regularly sized cat scratching posts from Location A to
Location B upon realization (prompted by expressed concerns of CSPCAC
in area adjacent to Location B) that the cats in areas adjacent to
Location B are not unusually diminutive in size.  Similarly, it is
hoped that CSPCACs might be able to address some of the pricing issues,
but as we have little faith in this, we are committed to the subsidy
program (let the taxpayers foot the bill, eh?).

As for the touting of problems, my friend, it is through this
constructive Petco v PetsMart dialogue that the impetus was provided
for the creation of this esteemed body, the Cat-Scratching Post
Manufacturing and Marketing Coordination Council.  We invite your input
at letters@cspmmcc.org .  We are pleased to provide solutions.

For another solution, choose Wal-Mart over PetsMart when looking for a
new cat scratching post.

Glad to be of assistance to cat scratching posts consumers,

I use Petsmart because they bring in animals from the shelters in the hope
that they may be adopted.

I got in contact with the district office of Petco and they contacted the
manager. The manager of the Petco in question has called me now we are
playing phone tag. My complaint will be rectified soon.

Congrats, Gina.  We're all pullin' for ya!

Down with PetsMart!
Emily Scherer - 07 Nov 2005 01:25 GMT
I do.  I went to a petco today to buy kitty litter and kitten food.
Their selection sucked!  I got more for my money shopping at petsmart.
Plus, I hate to say it, but petsmart actually takes better care of their
animals then the petco's I've been in.
