Hi

My cat is very funny what he eats, hes an adult male and i try to feed him 3
whiskers pouches per day and biscuits, but he turns his nose up at the food,
but will try to scrounge around in my cupboards for food. Iv tried different
flavours, different brands, and even dried food but nothing seems to work

Does he eat at all or just snubs the food

If he isn't eating vet time quick
if he snubs the food than comes back to it  typical cat he will eat when
he is hungry sounds like a spoiled cat if so

Hi Michelle,

If your cat is trying to scrounge from your cupboards, then he is obviously
hungry.  Maybe he is refusing his food simply because he can.  Are you being
too soft with him?  Stick with the fresh pouches, perhaps just two per day,
plus biscuits.  Since he's an adult, he's obviously eaten fairly normally
before and will again.  If he's over 8 or 9 years old, try him on 'senior'
biscuits which may better suit his mature metabolism.

Only you know how long he's been refusing food (unless a neighbour feeds
him).  Weigh him and see if he's lost any weight.  Has his behaviour, or
voice, changed?  Does he cry or strain in his litter tray?  If he poops
outside, wait till you see him drop a fresh deposit, then go out and examine
it for worms, hairballs or foreign objects.  (I do this routinely with my
cats so that I know they're well *and* so that I can answer vet's questions
when required.  Maybe he's simply got a bad tooth.  In your position, I
would take him straight to the vet to rule out any possibility of illness.
If he gets a clean bill of health (I truly hope he does), then be a bit
firmer with your furry monster.  Once he knows you have some resolve, he
should accept your authority and eat what you give him.  This is not being
cruel; provided he has a meal to go to, he won't starve.

Incidentally, you don't say which brand of food you're feeding him.  I once
tried a cheap brand from Lidl on my two cats, and they wouldn't touch it.
Can't say I blamed them .. it wasn't at all special, and I won't buy it any
more.  Felix pouches do the job for Cheetah and Panther.  Even so, they
occasionally leave a dish untouched.  Because I know this is good food, I
won't pander to them - they have biscuits and water constantly available, so
I know they won't go hungry.

Take Moggychops to the vet to reassure yourself .. then be firm with
Moggychops .. and also be firm with yourself.  Don't oblige yourself to
worry if you've ruled out all the problems.  A cat can sense a fretful owner
and either take advantage, or become so stressed itself that food refusal or
indoor peeing/spraying (or other behavoural problems) begin.  Whenever I've
had such problems, I make sure kitty has plenty of cuddles and praise so
he/she doesn't feel unloved or bullied.  When I put dinner down, as soon as
pussy's nose sniffs at the dinner, I say "good girl" and walk resolutely
away.  You may feel it's worth a try, but do take your cat to the vet first.

Let us know how you get on.
