Recently i had to rehome a very much loved cat called madam, this was
due to a serious house fire (which we both escaped from) and having to
relocate.  I found this very distressing.  how do we cope with such
situations. any ideas?

First We are glad both of you made it out
Second  You are going to need some counseling your self for post traumatic
stress.  You have the best stress reliever with you It will be difficult for
a while for the cat to get readjusted to environment be ready for accidents
to occur or weird behavior
Third  Depending on where you are at they are plenty of cat societies that
will help you out with the necessasities for your cat   Red cross should be
able to help you out and point you in the right way with the cat

Or just move. I know that sounds cold, but the cat will sense when you are
in need and vice versa. Kind of like when a couple get burned out of where
they live. Then if you find some things that are a bit much for you, go with
NMR's post.
