Pet Sitter or Boarding

I have 2 cats - one is a 14 year old indoor/outdoor cat who loves to
mostly be outdoors.  The other is a 5 month old kitten who stays
mostly inside but does go out through the cat door.  We have trained
these cats to use the back part of the yard as their litter box,
however they are litter box trained.

My husband and I will be going on a trip for about a week, and are
struggling to decide which would be better:  Having a pet sitter come
feed and check on them while we're gone, or take them to the vet for
boarding.

If we have a pet sitter come, we still can't decide if we should close
the cat door and leave them together inside all week or not.  The
older cat is still very grumpy with the kitten and likes to escape
through the cat door to get away from the kitten's play fighting. (I
think it's play - the older cat seems to think it's annoying.)  I
don't know how they'd do cooped up together for a week!

Any ideas?  Anyone know if cats get time out of the cages at boarding
places? I do plan to go by our vet's clinic to check out their
boarding rules.

Thanks,
Linda

Do cats get out of cages from boarding? Yes!!! Our one cat many years
ago...The first day we were gone, the help had went to feed Tiger and a dog
started barking and scared him and he got out. He was on meds, too, for
urinary problems. We never did find him. Of course, the vet reimbursed us
for the loss, but it never took his place. Then I had an elder cat put in
while I was at the hospital (she was on meds, too) and ended up had to put
her to sleep because she deteriorated so much while I was gone. I just will
trust either relatives to take care of mine or go through a pet sitting
service.

I always leave the pets at home and have someone check in on them twice a
day (I have 3 cats that are fed twice daily and 1 needs medication).
I feel they are happier to be at home, even if I'm not there, its better
than being in a small cage away from home for a week and hearing all the
dogs barking.
