Is this behavior some sort of mothering instinct?

I've got (or I should say, my cat has) a small blanket that was
supposed to be used as a nice place for her to sleep on and she found
an old Santa hat one day.

Sometimes she will pick one or the other of those up and carry it
around, sometimes leaving it in the middle of the floor, but sometimes
putting them in one of the places she likes to sleep - but she never
sleeps on them and she also appears to not want to step on them
either.

I was theorizing that maybe this is her feline equivalent of a girl
playing with her dolls.

Is this common behavior?  If so, is it common among male cats as well?

I have several cats that do that I have one that actually gets my old lady
undergarments out of the drawer and carries them to where she want to lay on
them.  I have a old female cat that carries around a white chew toy

Okay, but my cat never lays on them and it's weird to see her go out
of her way to avoid stepping on the blanket/bedding thing.

Sometimes it gets left in the doorway between the bedroom and
bathroom, which is a door which is never fully closed, but never fully
opened since it would restrict her access to her litter box if it
were.

When it is there, she jumps over it.
