I want to adopt another cat.   What is the secret to getting my
current cats to accept it and not try to kill it?

I brought in a cat on an emergency basis a few years ago,
my female acted like this female kittten was a Klingon coming
aboard the Enterprise.

I would have thought my cats would be happy I was giving a home
to a homless cat.

I've read that the best way is to keep the new cat separated from your other
cats for a while.  Then gradually introduce items from the new cat's room
with its scent on it (towels, toys, etc.) to your existing cats so they get
used to its scent and vice versa.  Then gradually let them see each other.
The next step is opening the door to the new cat's room and let them get to
know each other on their own terms, making these supervised visits until you
are sure they won't fight all the time.

I always have kept the new little one in a separate room and not allow the
other firballs in for a while.  They can get to know one another under the
door.  Maybe a little hissing till they get used to each other ( don't
punish them for the hissing )  I know everything is ok when they start
playing with each other under the door.  they still will be a little nervous
of one another but usually in about 20 minutes I have another tag team
wrestler on my hands.  ( never do this if you have an aggressive cat or
dog )  Good luck

"I would have thought my cats would be happy I was giving a home
to a homeless cat."  Come on you should know this you.  You just made Queen
or  King Tut lower on their totem pole just like you having a new manager
come and take over the position you were promised
