There's been an abandoned kitten running around my back garden for a
couple of days now, and despite numerous attempts to catch it, the wee
thing just seemed too full of energy (there's loads of places for it to
hide in the garden too)
Now, it has climbed into the engine of my car and just sort of lay there -
so I lifted it and set it into a box with a soft cloth to try and keep it
warm, not sure what to do though.. the poor thing can't move and seems
dehydrated, it just lays there and squeeks. I don't have any syringe's to
try to feed it water or anything and would take it to the vet but they're
closed today (sunday) so am not sure it's going to last the night, I've
been trying to feed it water using a spoon and it managed to gulp down a
few drops. I have never owned / looked after a cat,let alone a kitten. I
don't like to see it suffering though, anyone any suggestions what I could
to? Untill I take it to the vet tomorrow?

Thanks,

Paul

Call your vet any way. Ours has emergency services available. Maybe yours
does,too.

Is there a pet hospital nearby that you could take it to ??

1) Make sure kitty can't eat regular food--if he was old enough to climb
into the car & is away from his mother, he may be old enough to eat.  Try
water from a can of tuna, try ham, turkey, etc. to see if he'll eat.  If he
does, run to supermarket & get some canned cat food.  If he can eat that, it
has a lot of water in it as well.
2) If he can't eat solid food, if you can get to a drug store, they can sell
the top of a syringe, (without the needle),---Use that to carefully give him
some liquid....
2) If you can get to a petco, walmart, etc., there is something called KMR
that is 'milk' for kittens.  They also have special bottles but syringe
could work as well.
If you can't get KMR, try evap milk (maybe with an egg in it), water from
can of tuna, etc.
3) After kitty eats, rub his behind with a cloth as this will stimulate
elimination--this is what mom kitty would do
4) Keep him warm
5) You can also call emergency hospital, they can often give you more
details about feeding without having to bring him in which is big $$$$

When we were having trouble with our one the vet said to try meat based baby food because
he would get the moisture plus nourishment.  Mine still like the chicken with chicken
gravy as well as the turkey with turkey gravy as a treat on occassion.

Baby food and an eyedropper. But don't force it..just gently start
pressure anough for the kitten to start sucking. I would guess that if
he was old enough to be walking and climbing he is old enough for
babyfood.

But I don't understand that you say if was "running around, full of
energy" ...and now it is nearth death? What happened? Was there any
poison in your yard? On your outdoor plants, grass, etc?

You've gotten loads of good advice -- I just want to add that if you try
the baby food, check ingredients and do NOT get any that is seasoned
with onion powder, as this is a common ingredients and onions are toxic
to cats.  Good luck!  I so hope the little thing is still with you and
responding.  Let us know.

<SNIP ALL THE GOOD ADVICE =)>

Hi,

Thanks for all the help, he seems to just want to sleep a lot. he's
up walking about (albeit slowly) and drinking the water from a tin of tuna
- he also managed to eat a bit of the tuna. He's meow-ing (well
sqeaking more than meowing! :) quite a bit more too. I thought it odd too
when he was so full of energy before I'd found him but hopefully he's
going to be ok. He certainly lapped up the tuna water when it was set
below his nose! He's snuggled up in an old shoe box with some soft cloth's
at the minute and going to the vet's in the morning.

Good news!!!!!!! Kittens go downhill quick so if he didn't get food or
nutrients when he was out, he would have weakened quickly.  Also, make sure
he didn't get oil or stuff on him when he got into engine--One of mine was a
little one who got stuck in engine compartment & she was covered in oil.  I
didn't give her a bath but washed her off with a damp washcloth so she
wouldn't lick up the car grease.

If he's lapping up the tuna water & eating a little tuna, then he is
probably weaned & can eat cat food.  You can try some of the IAMS kitten
food (in most supermarkets) but not all kittens like it so get some regular
food too.  Basically, give him whatever he wants to eat, including people
food like ham, cheese, cottage cheese, etc. just to get fluids & some
nutrients in him.  He will probably need to go so if you can set up even a
temp litter box... a lot of supermarkets have temp carboard boxes with
litter already in them for a few dollars.  Also, an old dishpan (not too
high on sides) with some litter.  Take him to it & see if he goes....

Wonderful news! And thanks goes out to you for your efforts. Not
everybody would care as you have..I hope you plan on keeping the
kitten? You will have one hell of a bond with a kitten who's life you
saved.

Keep in mind howevermthat Tuna is not the best food for kittens and/or
Cats. Please,as soon as you can buy some regular canned kitten foods
and kitten substitute milk from a Pet Store.

And,I for one, would LOVE to see a photo of this little one when you
can get around to it.

<SNIP>

Hi again

More good news, he's back with his mommy now! Apparently there's wild cats
where a relative of mine lives and he feeds them, unbeknown to me one of
them had kittens recently and one of said kittens had managed to hide
somewhere on my car and be transported 8 miles! where he duly went about
his business of running about hiding & squeaking, he must of been scared
stiff though, and crawled back to where he was hiding (was near the
engine) where he fell asleep, for me to find him and try and get him to
eat/drink/move - all he seemed to want to do was sleep.
After discovering where he came from I thought it'd be better to take him
home to his mommy there would be a lot more cats as company for him there
anyway. Before I took him back, I took quick picture using my phone, it's
over at. http://www.paulmcc.plus.com/DSC00082.JPG (sorry if it's a bit big =)
