What is a good way to keep pet cats away from one particular room when we're
not there?

Are there invisibile electrical boundary things that shock them through a
collar if they approach?  How about sprays?  Other ideas?

I'm not sure, but I think I heard somewhere that cats can't stand
citrus fruit smells (orange, lemon, etc.).

They also can't stand to walk on tinfoil.

But the absolute fool-proof way to keep a cat away from a certain area
is to get a "scat mat" which is an electrically-powered mat that gives
a mild shock when stepped on.  I don't know how some people feel about
using these, but I have heard that they do work.  They are available at
larger pet stores like PetSmart.

I don't know how I feel about using one.  There are good arguments on
both sides.  Still, the thought of "shocking" my cat, even mildly, does
make me a little uneasy, to say the least.

The "shock" is generally harmless...BUT if a Cat had a bad heart,it
could be deadly.
