My little baby had a urinary tract infection which, after anti-biotics, has
now gone away. Now she's back to being a good little girl and using the
box.

However, during the past few weeks she has made some accidents that have
created darkening of the the varnish on the hardwood floors.

Are there any techniques to return things to normal short of sanding and
refinishing?

Nope, you're stuck with it unless you resand and restain, unless of
course you let the cat piss all over the entire floor so that it
matches.
