Hello everyone!
I am generally a lurker here after finding this group a few weeks ago. I
have 2 questions that are pretty much completely unrelated ;) but I'm hoping
someone can offer some help.
1) Just bought a new home. The seller bought it as a foreclosure and fixed
it up quite nicely. Problem is, the woman who lived here had (as the
neighbors tell it) about 25 cats here. We had to tear down the kitchen
cabinets as there were stains up there from the cats. Other than that, the
rest of the house is great--new carpet, tile. However, the seller kind of
negleted the two linen closets. There's new rug in there, which I've pulled
up and used Nature's Miracle on. Didn't help. Sprayed all the walls in the
closet too. Didn't help. Any suggestions? I have no problem pulling out
the piece of carpet in there, it's just a closet. But what other solutions
could I try?
2) This is a problem for a while. My kitty Timon is overweight. You can't
tell looking down at his back--he looks trim. Unfortunately he's got quite
a belly :( I feed him Science Diet light at the suggestion of the vet.
He's been eating that for at least 3 years now--never a change. He gets the
minimum amount as does my other cat. What else can I try?
Thanks for any help/advice you can give!

Diana, hi. Can't help with the first, but my Rexie is overweight (3 yrs).
The vet put him on Purina OM (Overweight Mgmt). At first he didn't lose, so
she kept reducing the amt of food. He got down to 5/8 cup/day and he finally
lost 3 oz - - 3 OZ !!
Then, she reduced him to 1/2 C per day (which I fought, but she said, 'he
weighs less so he doesn't need as much!) and we've been on that for 2
weeks. I take him in this Friday to see if he's lost again. It's so painful.
I give him 1/8 C 4 times per day. He gobbles it right down. I give him 1/8
at about 8a.m., 1p.m., 6p.m. and then when I go to bed. And when I show up
with the scoop, he just mews so pitifully!
(I must be strong!!)

How about feeding him nutritious food instead? Don't feed dry food at
all, cats are carnivores, look at the ingredients list! Canned food is
always better. If your cat won't eat canned food (some cats just have to
eat kibble), there is a new food out there that doesn't have cereals.
It's Innova Evo.

Try a hot solution of oxyclean.

Science diet is crap, get something better. :) Canned food is better
than dry, cats have no need to be eating corn or rice. Felidae, Innova,
and Wellness are good brands.

I just started my cats on EVO. I can tell a bit they they are trimming and
tapering--but not losing muscle mass.
Maybe speak to your vet about this kind of food. It is the, so far, closest
to a raw diet in a dry cat food form.
Thanks,
Jen

Well, I would have suggested Nature's Miracle, but...

More exercise. Increase his play periods with you and whatever fantastic
toys get him energized.

Oh, I had forgotten. For overweight cats--my vet suggest using a laser light
and other things to encourage them to chase things.
Have Fun,

Thanks for the suggestions!
As for the odor, well, I think I'm going to remove the carpet piece in
there. It's a new carpet/padding but maybe the odor got itself embedded in
there?? ;)
Thanks for the fitness suggestions as well--Timon gets his share of exercise
but we'll work harder. The posts about food also got me thinking about
their diet, adding more protein through canned food maybe?? I've checked
out some websites and will keep looking for more info.
Thanks again!!

Good! Now that you're headed down a good path feline-health-wise, can we
address the issue of possible confusion about which of us is posting? Being
as how I've been posting here off and on for several years, might I ask that
you post as "Diana at tink1974", or as "Diana too", or as " a new and more
fabulous Diana", or whatever? Not a huge deal, but we're sure to be
mistaken for each other by somebody.

The only cure I know of for cat urine is a new house, but about the weight
prob....
1st how long has it been? We wouldn't want your cat to lose too much weight
too fast.
Did your vet check the cats' blood to see if he is hypothyroid? Its not a
very common problem in cats but it can be.
Also, feeding a lite diet will help as long as you feed him the proper
amount and cut out all snacks. Start at your vet's recommended dosage and
if that doesn't show a small drop over a few weeks (we don't want them
losing too fast) call your vet and let them know you want to decrease the
amount and see what they say about that.
A big problem with the "lite" diets is that people tend to let the pets eat
more, but then we aren't solving any overweight issues that way.

He's been overweight for at least 4 years now...saw the vet earlier this
year and they didn't seem too concerned but kept commenting that he was
'big'! So I followed the Sci. Diet recommendations, he doesn't get any
extra. He doesn't get any snacks so that's not a problem (loved them when he
was a kitten, can't bother w/them now).
It's been a bit of a challenge to find a good, concerned vet down here
(Orlando area). My original one in NY was absolutely phenomenal--she moved
to FL too, but unfortunately a few hundred miles south of here!

Sorry to hear your awesome vet is out of reach.
Are you feeding him the adult dry/wet or the senior dry/wet? If he is over
6 I'd recommend to use the senior since cats of that age become less active
and don't need as much energy
Are there any other concerns with your cat? Does he drink/urinate a lot
(one sign of diabetes)? Difficulty breathing (too much fat impinges on the
ability of the lungs to expand)? As I don't live in Fl I don't know any good
vets down there, sorry.
All I can say is keep looking. I don't know if Gainesville is anywhere near
you, but there is a vet college there and the vet schools are always full of
vets and student vets that are concerned and love your pet.
If you are using wet food, I'd recommend giving at least 1/2 the daily need
in dry and 1/2 wet (better for their teeth - and less smelly in the litter
box). I use only dry myself unless I need to give medication crushed up in
something.
If you are using adult lite, switch to senior lite at the recommended
amount. Try it for 4 weeks. If there is not a drop in weight (like 1/2 -
1lb) then decrease the amount a little every 2 weeks until you find the
amount that your cat loses weight on.
Please don't let him lose too much too fast. Even if your cat was 15 lbs if
he loses 1 lb per month that's like a 150lb person losing 10 lbs in a month
(2.5 lbs/week) which is a lot.
I'd still like to see your cat getting checked out by a vet because if there
is something medically wrong with him, all we'd be doing by putting him on a
diet is possibly hiding an illness or even exacerbating it.
Good luck!

<good advice snipped :) >
Thank you Carla! I've printed out your post to refer to better--he's never
shown any signs of illness, just his little beer belly! Am on the lookout
for a vet that will give him the attention he needs---uh, DESERVES! :)
Thanks!
