Ear Mites?

I have three indoor cats, one age 7-1/2 and two age 6.  They have never had
any parasite problems before, but since my oldest one went to the vet to
have her teeth cleaned, one of her ears has been full of black goop and she
is shaking her head.  Could she have gotten ear mites from her brief (one
day) stay at the vet?  And if so, what is the current treatment?  (The last
time I had cats with ear mites was about 15 years ago, when I adopted a pair
of kittens from a shelter.)  Is there something I can get for her over the
counter, or do I have to take her back to the vet again?

You can get the stuff from your vet, but I'd have him/her look at kitty to
confirm it's mites.  I'd also do it SOON b/c the mites are dangerous and
also very annoying for kitty.

What she said. Also, I highly recommend switching from your regular flea
prevention treatment to Revolution. It's a topical medication that
prevents and treats not only fleas, but also ticks, roundworms,
hookworms, and ear mites. :)

Both very good advices. In addition, if it's confirmed to be ear mites by a
vet (by a look of ear debris under a microscope at low power - it's quick
and easy - so I'd imagine it shouldn't cost too much), be sure to mention
that you have multiple animals at home.

Depending on the situation, the vet may advise you to treat all of your
cats at the same time and not just the one with earmite symptoms, for best
results. Ear mites travel outside the ears, and can be found on
asymptomatic cats and dogs, moving from animal to animal. (BTW, they move
AMAZINGLY fast for such a tiny thing - just barely visible with naked eyes
under very good light. I used to check cats for ear mites at a local
shelter, so I have seen many.)

I have seen Acarexx (topical ivermectin) used for it and it seemed to work
fine. But it's a prescription item so you need to get it from a vet.

My kitty had that also at about that age. I took her to the vet....even
the vet wasn't sure what it was.....not like any mites he had ever seen
anyway. Just black specks.
The vet cleaned her ears out best he could, gave her a shot of
anti-biotics and me some topical anti-biotic cream to put in her ear
for a few days after. Cleared it up.
