Hi

Can anyone help explain my healthy cat's sudden fad?  I have some old
charcoal in my garden, untidily left from a bbq from weeks back, but he's
suddenly developed this obsession with licking it.  Any idea why this could
be, and could it cause him any harm?  Obviously, I will now clean it up, but
I'm very mystified.

Thanks in advance

I can't shed any light on his licking charcoal, but I'll add one. My Rexie
has a habit of licking photographs. You know, like when they're still in the
envelope from the store. He'll be pawing at something and I'll look down and
he's pulled them out of the folder and is licking them. I take them away
cause I'm assuming the chemicals aren't good for him.

Oh, good!  This means my Celeste is less weird -- she's a photo licker as
well, or would be if allowed.

Patches doesn't lick photos, she licks skin..........and then bites!  lol  I
guess she doesn't want to bite anything dirty, so she cleans her humans
first.  lol

My Tiki has always loved licking plastic bags---actually, I think every cat
I've ever had did. I think they like the feel on their faces and the noise
the bag makes when it rustles under their weight. Tiki will come running and
go straight into the bag when I shake it at her, then I twirl her around in
the air a little while she plays inside the bag. I'll poke her and she will
bite at my finger from inside the bag. My other cat, Freddie, was much slower
to learn how to properly play with a bag---I really think she has only gotten
interested because she is jealous of the good time she sees Tiki having!

My Texas does that too.  But he likes to chew on them too.  If we catch him
in the act we usually have to run over and stop him.  He gets awfully
distracted with those plastic bags.

The chemicals on photographs is sweet tasting.  That's why they lick
pictures/photos, etc.

No, I haven't.  It's sweet tasting because photos contain propylene glycol
(the same chemical in antifreeze).  Seriously, it's not meant to be funny,
as a cat licking a photo can be a fatal mistake.

Charcoal is not good for cats, being it could have chemicals in it that they
don't list simply because you are not supposed to ingest it but we all know
that you do because it floats up to your food as you cook with it. Hears the
things, They tell pregnant woman that if they ever get the desire to eat
charcoal, clay, dirt anything of that sort they should come in immediately
because it is a symptom of certain types of anemia.
I was told by my vet that if any of my cats took to eating thear litter that
I should bring them in for bloodwork for the very same reason.

That's just my two cents.

Charcoal is good for dogs and it is listed as being among the ingredients
of many popular brands and types of dog foods.

My cats will eat dog food and my dogs will eat cat food.

I do not feed my cats dog food nor do I feed my dogs cat food unless I
am temporarily out of one or the other type of food.  The situation of
my feeding the dogs cat food or feeding the cats dog food never persists
for more than a day or two.  Normally I will feed both species of pets
the types of pet foods designed especially for them.

My cats and my dogs are all very healthy critters.
