Strange meowing or crying???

Hi. We have a female cat that is about 9 months old. She has been
fixed. We are just wondering about a toy (item) we let her play with
and the vocal response she makes when she picks it up in her mouth.
The toy is a blue fuzzy ball (kinda like short fur) about 1 inch in
diameter with a ribbon attached that looks like a tail. It has no
chemicals or cat nip inside as it is not really a cat toy. It is just
an advertisement item for a company. Whenever the cat picks this up
she makes what sounds like crying and meowing mixed of different tones
and volume. My wife says it sounds like she in singing. She does not
do this with any other toy she picks up. I am wondering if she thinks
it is a mouse and is displaying what she has caught, or if there could
be some other reason for this behaviour. When you approach her she
drops the item (ball) and stops making the sound.

Has anyone seen (heard) this behaviour or something similar.

I saw this behaviour in my previous cat. Her "toy" was a tiny seal and over
the 11 years that she exhibited this behaviour with this particular item, I
never did manage to figure it out. Every now and then we would hear here -
upstairs - and within a few minutes she would come running into the living
room where we were with the seal between her teeth. We'd say "hello" to her,
she'd drop the seal and then go on about her business.

I'll add that we, too, see this in our oldest cat, Hazel.  With her,
it's any of the fabric mice we have lying around the house.  (I've lost
count of how many there are.)  Unfortunately, like you, I don't know the
cause of this sound, but it certainly appears to be a "good" sound as
she's generally quite a happy cat when she's making it.  The only
downside we've noticed is how loud it can get.. and waking me up at
2:00am, is not fun! ... at least it's not fun for me, anyway.  Hazel
might think it's a hoot.

We have to old wool socks that we tied into knots.  Their names are Wooly
sock #1 and Wooly sock #2.  Oscar, our seal point Siamese picks up the sock
and walks around and howls excessively.  I ask him silly things like 'you
got your wooly?', 'you kilt wooly sock'?, etc., etc.

It's quite natural for the meoooooows and howls.  Your kitty is enjoying the
toy!!  ;o)

Yep....happens here too.  Texas has numerous toy mice (with catnip inside,
although he's never really seemed to like the catnip that much) and he makes
a chirpy meow.  It's almost like he's trying to tell us, "hey, I found food!
Look what I have!  No, really, come see!!  Oh shoot....ok.  Well I'll come
to you then!!"  And he comes in and drops it in front of us.  Then he's
fine.  I look at it as a present from Tex.  Of course the meowing can go on
for awhile before he decides he actually wants to bring it to us and that
can get annoying sometimes.  ;-)

This phenomenon can be really funny (and sometimes really weird) the first
time you have a cat that does it!  Many do, but not the majority, so even
some people who have cats haven't heard it.  As a number of posters have
already responded, it's quite normal.  My Camille was one who used her
"mouse voice" only for certain toy mice, and only when carrying one in her
mouth.  Sometimes she would bring it to me, and sometimes she would take it
to her food dish as if to give it a meal.

One of my felines, Peeve, has a different meow or whine for different toys.
My older feline, Patches, has one specific meow she does when she wants
someone to play with her and she means RIGHT NOW!  lol
