Hi folks, I'm new to this group but not new to owning cats.  I got my first
kitten in a long time about 3 weeks ago and he's a regular ball of trouble.
The only problem is he has long hair and occasionally, he'll get poop stuck
in it.  I'm not sure what I should do to prevent this other than shaving his
behind and I doubt he'd appreciate that.  Is it maybe his diet?  He's eating
well and exercising like there's no tomorrow.  He sure didn't like his hind
end bath I had to give him.  I couldn't even wipe him with a dry paper
towel, it gets stuck too well.  Sorry about the yucky topic but I'm sure I'm
not the only one who has experienced this.

Not so unusual a problem....  See if you can clip the hairs around his hind
end... also, try wiping with one of those moist baby wipes.  My cat hates
when I do either but it is really the only way of keeping that area
clean....

Hi Marissa

If Jeremiah is still very young, it may be worthwhile feeding him the
special kitten dry food that you can get at the vets.  Get a brand that
contains colostrum (here in Australia there is a brand called Advance) as
the colostrum may help minimise the risk of diarrhoea in your kitten.

If he has longish fur around his rear end, just trim it off short with
scissors so that the clean-up won't be so traumatic (for you and for him!).
He will appreciate it, because cats - young and old - don't like being
dirty!

Cheers!

Some long haired cats will get some poop back there on occasion. This
fellow might be still figuring out how to properly poop to avoid that.
I'd just trimp some of the fur around his anus in the meantime. Be
careful so you don't hurt the little one.
As far as food is concerned, if you're feeding a good quality canned
food you're doing ok. Remember, cats are carnivores, there is no reason
to feed them corn.

Hi, Marissa.

My long haired Tabby Isis had the same problem. Nasty . . . I take her to
the vet's every month or two for a bath since she will not tolerate my
giving her a bath. While she's there they trim her nails and I ask them to
shave off the hair around her rectum. At first the vet shaved off too much
hair and she came home with no hair all the way down her back legs. So, I
was more specific the second time.

I don't know how your cat will react to being manhandled and having buzzy
things around her private parts. In my case I have to slip Isis a cat
tranquilizer pill prior to the visit if I can sneak it into her food. It's
either that or pay $30.00 for sedation. The vet requires some kind of
tranquilizer as they once had to call in four (4) adults to hold her down
during m'lady's bath, trim, and shave. <-: After that they laid down the
law.

Wow that's quite the ordeal!  I used a pair of haircutting scissors to trim
around the area and down the back of the legs.  He looks kind of funny but I
hope it will help the problem.  I had my husband hold him but he struggled
like there was no tomorrow.
Thanks everyone for the advice.

Sounds like what happened when the vet tried to give my Missy a pill ;-)
Took three of us (me, the vet nurse and the receptionist) to hold her
while the vet gave her a worming tablet..! We use Droncit spot-on liquid
now, much less hassle <g>

O'siyo.  Sort of new here - been 'lurking' for a day or two  lol.  I used to
have to help my Aunt get the poop off of her kitty's fur.  The easiest way
we figured out was to get a huge bath towel and basically 'straight-jacket'
her in it, leaving access to her neather regions.  It worked most of the
time  lol
