I never thought that this would happen to me or my cats. My cat who was
almost one (Tom) and his mother who was about two (Demi)disappeared
last night. I went outside searching for them and they did not come
when I called. I thought maybe they were having too much fun and didn't
want to come in yet. This morning when i woke up and went walking
around my house looking for them. I got worried and drove around my
house and surrounding area before i left for school. Since I couldn't
not go to school I left to my education. When i got home i called my
dad to see if he knew where they were. He hadn't seen them. I went
outside and shook my cat food to try to lure them to come to me. I went
to walk around my house and found Tom lying on his side dead. I dropped
the food i was carrying to make sure he was in fact dead. To my horror
he was. It doesn't look like he was hit with anything or shot. The only
guess I have left is that someone poisoned him. He never hurt anyone so
i don't understand why someone would do this to him. I still haven't
found his mother. I have no idea where to look for her. I hope she's
alive. I hope someone here can give me an idea where to go from here. I
lost and confused. hopefully someone can give me some advice.
thanks,
Sara
I also forgot to mention they both have collars.

I'm really sorry about your loss Sara. I just lost my beloved Blanca in
February when she died unexpectedly. I also have a tomcat who stays outside
and I worry about finding him run over or something else. But this is the
price we pay to let them live wild and free. My tom would go beserk if he
had to stay inside. So we give him plenty of love and hugs and watch him go
off into the night. Once again I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope you
find your other cat. Larry

Sorry to hear that, has to be hard to deal with. One note on poison, often
times it is unintentional, many people place poison around their sheds,
garages, houses and so forth to control vermin and the cats get into it. I
have only two neighbors the one used poison but was civil enough to remove
it when she found out I had the cats. The cats patrol her place for prey and
that pleases her.

I'm sorry for your loss, Sara. I hope you're able to find Demi alive and
well. This is just one of the reasons why I keep my kitties indoors. You
never can tell when your cat may come across someone who dislikes cats
enough to harm them. :(

Sara,
It would be wonderful if Demi is unharmed. I don't know what you can do
other than wait for her and hope. If she is alive, she will come home. It
does seem that poisoning is a likely cause of Tom's death, whether
accidental or intentional. There is always the possibility of death by
natural causes at any age, but this is certainly highly suspicious.
In many, many areas, cats should be kept indoors. I am not suggesting that
you did anything wrong. For years I had cats who went out. But once a
whole family of them disappeared -- trapped by my neighbors, I found out
later. And I had one who was hit by a car, one who was bitten by a snapping
turtle, and several who had fleas, ticks or parasites (things that at one
time I thought were minor problems even though they can cause serious
illnesses.) I have learned to keep my cats indoors, and to provide them
with lots of fun places to hide, things to climb on, and toys for play and
exercise. I've learned that cats can be perfectly content to stay indoors
where they are protected.
Since you love cats, you will probably have many of them in your lifetime.
You will grieve for each one when it dies, but you will be glad for the joy
that each one brought you, and the special pleasure of having a bond of
affection with such an amazing creature as is each individual cat. In
future, you will probably want to keep them inside.
I hope Demi comes home.

Thanks everyone... i think that i am going to get an autospy done on
Tom if Demi does not return by tomorrow. And if foul play is what has
indeed happened, I will let the management of the area i live in know (
I live in a trailer park) and the manager knows my cats. She wants to
know whether it was foul play or not so if it is she can inform the
residents of the trailer park of this misfortune and hopefully find out
who did it, if indeed it was something like poisoning.
Thanks again everyone for the support.

I'm so sorry about Tom.I hope you find Demi alive and well.Cats especially
like to hide some place when they are dying so look under your trailer and
behind things just in case.I hope this isn't what happened but thought I
should clue you in.We found my mother's cat under a large porch enclosed
with lattice.She had been poisoned.It broke my mom's heart,so I can
understand what you are going through. DEW

I also had a cat poisoned a couple of months ago (it's been a horrible year
for me so far). And there's no pain like it. Losing a pet is bad enough, but
knowing that someone hated a cat (or just cats in general) enough to
actually poison it is . . . well, there's another thing there's no words
for.
Suffice to say I know the grief and the anger well. Especially since Kimba
left behind her son (Rocky) who daily broke my heart with his own grief. I
also no longer let my cats outside, even though you'd think it is (or should
be) safe on the quiet street and in the quiet town I live in. And a trailer
park should also be a quiet and safe place for a cat to live.
So, so sorry for your loss.
Sending prayers that Demi comes home soon.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thoughts.
Sincerely,
Sara
I forgot to add--please let us know the results of the autopsy if you do it
and anything new about Demi. Thanks DEW
