Because she's not my cat and they aren't purebreed! It's an idiotic idea to
sell cats that aren't purebred for $20!

Um, you couldn't purchase a purebred for less than 150$ unless there was a
considered defect. Most purebreds are in the 200$ and up range.
One of my friends used to show her Chocolate Point Siamese and Silver Tabby,
and I would go to some of the shows with her. The prices that some of her
show friends paid for their cats (or were charging for kittens if breeders)
she mentioned to me made my socks curl. I cannot see paying hundreds of
dollars just because a critter has a certain 'look'. Persian cats,
particularly. They are very popular on the show circuit here, as well as
Burmese.
The person who suggested an asking price was not trying to be funny, mean or
ridiculous. If you read through the available posts on free kittens in this
NG, there is one about 2 elderly ladies who used free kittens as bait for
coyotes on their land. Even a small price, say 5$ each, or 3$ each, is a
deterrent. People who train dogs for dogfights, who raise large snakes, or
sometimes who are just plain cruel, will take free kittens and use them for
their purposes.
We know she is your grandpa's cat........but kindness does not have a border
at which it stops. I am sure you care about her. And it is possible that
where you are, these suggestions are not realistic. You just never realized
the possible parameters before :) But no-one means anything but good-will.

$20 is a very reaonable price to ask for a kitten. Most purebreds are at the
very minimum $150.
If you live in a poor area, or money is an issue for you, why not do the
person who owns the cat a favor, and go to your local SPCA and buy them a
low cost spay certificate as a gift? Even some vets offices will offer a low
cost spay/neuter. It's the ultimate kindness you can do.....to have a momcat
keep giving birth, litter after litter, is harmful to her, shortens her
life, and most likely a good portion of those kittens that are given away
free either end up on the street, dumped off at shelters, or worse. It's
extremely irresponsible to allow this to continue.

Hey, this is a FANTASTIC idea! I was thinking "That momcat needs spaying",
but it is difficult to suggest it when one does not know the financial
situation of another. But 1) the asking of a monetary amount tends to steer
away the weirdos who look for free babies for feeding snakes, dog-baiting, a
new one for me----baiting coyotes 2) the end amount can be used toward a
spay for the momcat = a terrific idea!
I live in Canada.....Saskatchewan. Our SPCA has incentive programs for barn
cats, and some for low income. If your area has anything like that, perhaps
you can get a lower spay rate.
