You have all heard about my cat Pearl and how I saved her from the
coyotes.Well, today I was driving on a road through the desert and this
furry little thing walked out of the desert right in front of my truck.I
almost ran over it.It is one funny looking puppy.Grey with mottled black
spots and light brown legs. You've heard "so ugly,it's cute".That's it.I
had to take it to a friend to find out if it was a coyote pup.It is not.It
was so thirsty and hungry I thought it would burst before it got it's
fill.About 8" long and 4-5" high. Just a little thing.Pearl came into the
kitchen while it was eating and just tore into it.I didn't think she would
do that to a baby.Good grief it's only been a little over 2 months ago she
was in the same fix as it.She didn't act this way because of her
kittens--they were two rooms away and in a closet besides.I didn't want or
need a cat when Pearl needed saving and I sure didn't want or need a puppy
but it needed saving.I can't just leave these poor animals out to starve
or get eaten in the desert.Damn the people that dump these poor little
things --just because THEY don't want them.So cruel.Well, back to the
problem with Pearl--she needs an attitude adjustment.Any suggestions?

Beg to differ with you, Dew, about it not having to do with the kittens.
I'm thinking that a new momcat is going to be verrrry sensitive to any
changes in her environment, and a DOG? In her kitchen?  From Pearl's p.o.v.,
the very idea!  And a dog that even you thought might have been a COYOTE
pup?  Intolerable!  Pup needs it's own room for awhile, I'd say.  Clear out
of sight for a couple of days (she'll still be getting it's scent), then put
up some kind of a screen door where Pearl can look at it if she wants to.
Then wait until she is acting fairly ho-hum about it before allowing another
close encounter.

I'd love to the puppy -- how about putting up a pic for us?  And, bless you.
You're a good soul.  I'm trying to remember, is it AZ or NM where you live?

Hi Diana. I'm in AZ.You just may be right about Pearl.I'm playing "musical
chairs"--sort of here.I pen the puppy up in my office while the cat has
the run of the house and feeding dishes in the kit. Then I take the litter
tray and put it and the cat in the bedroom where the kittens are and let
the puppy have the run of the house and different feeding dishes. What a
trip.I was talking to the pup last night and told her that when you are
born ugly you really have to have a very beautiful name.So today after
some thought, I named her Amber--it is pretty and I was thinking about the
"Amber Alerts" when a child is missing. She definately was a lost child.

Sounds like you might have an Australian Cattle Dog or something related. As
for Pearl use a water gun on her when she starts getting ugly. Good luck.

Hi.I think you may be right or close anyway. Two different people told me
yesterday that the puppy looked like a "Heeler". I am not familiar with
that breed but I am checking into it. The water gun sounds like a good
idea. She still won't even let me touch the kittens.I'm beginning to feel
like an ousider in my own home. Ridiculous! This is coming to a
screeeeeeching end.   DEW

Well,well,well.I can't believe it.After investigating---evidently the ugly
little puppy I found in the desert has presigious heritage. She is a
Queensland Heeler or Blue Heeler and apparantly purebred or damn close to
it.O.K. you Aussies out there---isn't that an Australian working
dog?Cattle or sheep or both?Which is it?She is very smart.So loving.I
think she will be a very loyal pet. Can't believe that I didn't end up with
a mutt.Hope she gets prettier as she grows though.  DEW

Here ya go, Dew,

http://www.akc.org/breeds/australian_cattle_dog/index.cfm

My cousin had two, my aunt and uncle had one (that I babysat), and I would
say they're one of my favorite breeds.  :)  Very intelligent and loyal.  I
do suggest giving Amber a job to do though.  She'd probably excell at
agility training and/or obedience.

So--a cattle dog, huh? Are there a lot of cattle ranches in Australia?I
thought it was primarily sheep country. Not that it really matters as far
as Amber is concerned---here.From the pictures in my dog books it looks as
though that full grown they are evidently what would be called medium
size.Is that correct?I hope her hair isn't going to be very long. What a
shame--I only have 5 1/2 acres and no stock.Maybe when she is older I can
send her up the road to the longhorn steer ranch for a visit now and then.

Yep, cattle.  :)  Wouldn't know too much about whether or not there's a ton
of cattle in Australia though.  ;-)  Yes, I wouldn't consider them to be
large dogs at all.  And no, the hair isn't long either.  I'm not sure that I
would necessarily call it medium length, but yes they do shed.  :)  ACD are
usually great for people that are active.  They've got to channel that
energy somewhere.  Whether it be running, long walks, playing fetch,
frisbee....something to get their mind working.  This is not a breed that
will just sit around the house all day and be happy about it.

Geeeeeeeees! Talk about a dumby. I didn't even notice your enclosure before
I replied. How utterly stupid I am.Thank you so very much. Amber passes
with flying colors except for some black spots on her back.Maybe they will
blend in later. She should make a great guard dog.Pearl is sooooooooo mad
at me.Because I'm allergic to cats--I can't have her on my lap or carry
her around and I have been carrying the pup because otherwise Pearl would
tear her up.I think I am definately going to get a squirt gun if I have
any hope of overcoming the total havoc at my house.Pearl came over to the
computer a few minutes ago and really told me off.I left her litter tray
in the back bedroom and it is suppose to be in the laundry room.Good
grief--you would think I committed a cardinal sin---bitch,bitch,bitch.We
had an arguement and she won. I moved it back into the laundry room. She's
all happy now.Not because she got me to move the damned thing but because
she won the arguement.  DEW

That's funny. I just got griped out by my cats as well. I changed their
litter to a cheap litter temporarily. They have always used Tidy cat and
they are loyal to it. I mixed the cheap with a little bit of the old stuff
so it still had the smell of their potty and they stood around watching me
do this. They took one sniff and followed me around the house crying. I
thought it was funny at first but as the day wore on they wore me out. There
really isn't anything I can do about it right now money being tight.
