Played phone tag with the vet all day today - she finally spoke to my fianc?
this evening.   She wants to talk to me, and also wants me to talk to the
other vet in the practice

The mass is a tumor and it is cancerous.  They are recommending amputation
and surgery to be next Wednesday.  (a bit over a week).

Here's the thing.  Sabrina is 7 yrs old.  She's also 17.5lbs and that's with
a struggle to keep her weight down.  (she eats special prescription diet
food and gets less than 3/4 cup of food a day).  She's always hungry.    (we
got her 4 yrs ago from the vet and she was 19lbs at the time) But my thought
is - she's pretty big to begoing to 3 legs.

Comments the vet told BF - 1.  They could amputate and she might develope
arthritis in the other leg from all the pressure and end up in alot of pain.
2.  They might start the surgery/amputation and find that the tumor extends
into the chest cavity (although I'd hope maybe that would have turned up on
the xrays).  And then they wouldn't be able to remove more and would have to
abort the surgery and not remove the entire thing.  3.  They can't give me a
difinitive life expectany in any case.   They can't say that amputating the
leg will help her live a good 3 more years.   They don't know, its very
possible that at this point she ight only have 6 months.  They just don't
know and can't give me answers.

One thing is we don't know how long the tumor has been there.   The
swelling, we noticed 3 weeks ago.  But the tumor could have been there
longer and its possible its bigger than they expect it to be.

Surgery recovery time is at least 1.5 weeks or more before she will be able
to start adjusting.  Personally I'm in a quandry there - I don't have any
vacation time to take off from work to sit with an ill cat.  I hate having
to confine her to the master bath because of this.  But if that's what I
have to do, then we'll have to do that.  :{

BF's thought is to not amputate and just provide Sabrina with the best care
we can for the time she has left.

Me - I just don't know.  I'd like to do some research and get some advice.
I've never dealt with animal illnesses, so I guess I'll be researching and
posting on the health related groups.

I'd also love to hear other's input.   Bone cancer - amutate or not?   And
if anyone has some linkes to help my research, I'd be appreciative.

Thanks,

Jayjay,

I'm so sorry to hear the news.  I don't have any advice, but I think you're
doing the right thing to do your research.  Talk to as many people as you
can, the more knowledgable, the better.  It is such a difficult decision,
but you obviously want her to have the best chance at the longest life, but
also quality of life as well.  I'm a bit nervous about them waiting over a
week to operate on something like cancer, but then, that gives you time to
do some research as well, so I suppose it's for the best.  Do keep us
informed as to how things turn out, Sabrina has been in my thoughts.  Poor
baby, I hope however things turn out she doesn't have to suffer too much,
she sounds like a sweet kitty.

Hugs and Best Wishes,
Ann

I have known people who had this disease, but no animals.  If it is
caught early    there might be a chance, but you do face an unknown.
Many purrs for Sabrina.   MLB
