A little while ago, we brought our cat downstairs (she sleeps upstairs in a
room wit h food and water that the other cats don't go in) and we found her:

- stinking as if she had thrown up on herself (but we could not find
anything that she had thrown up)

-very weak.

She stays in a room with guinea pigs; could eating hay do this?
She went and drank water as the first thing she did, but we can't figure out
what's wrong.
There was some orange stuff on her when we bathed her; don't know what that
means.

Take her to the vet immediately.

VETERINARIAN!!!!

My guess, very strong odor but nothing to indicate why she
smells......................blood urea is high, indicating kidney failure.
not just chronic renal failure, but organ failure.  Normally when the cat
reeks and there is no obvious cause for it, there is a high level of
something in the blood that is being released through the pores-----and at
that point it is time for serious medical care. I can't think of anything
else at the moment, unless she ate something that was toxic, and produced
the same reaction.

Please, take your kitty to a veterinarian asap.

Your kitty needs medical attention ASAP.What kind of orange
stuff?Powder,liquid or what?
Knucklehead - 04 May 2005 07:42 GMT
Back to the orange stuff.Where was it? Around the mouth or on the
body.Could it be insulation? Most of that is made out of fiberglass and if
ingested could be lethal.

So how the devil is the sick cat? I get so mad when someone posts a topic
about a sick animal and gets everyone all worked up and worried and then
leaves us hanging. You could at least acknowledge our responses and let us
know if she is alright or not.  DEW

Yes, I would also like to know what happened to this kitty.  Did you take
her to a veterinarian?  did she get better?  How is she doing?

Many people do get involved when they help give advice - - they really are
interested in the outcome.

Please do not post a 'hanger' and then just leave everyone dangling.  Please
let us know what happened with your cat.  I lost my much-loved 19 year-old
'baby-girl' Munchkin in January/05.  I am very empathetic, and open to the
pain of others.  It is very difficult to give direction to others when some
never let you know what happened.

My daughter posted this out of desparation that night, and we did bring
Glory to the afterhours emergency vet.  Long story short, they blood tested,
gave IV fluids (she was very dehydrated) and was examined.  Turns out the
orangish color was from very concentrated urine from dehydration, and the
cause (and horrible odor) was from 2 big pus filled ulcers in the back of
her mouth.  The diagnosis was liquid potpourri type poisoning, which we
think came from a little jar of a gel air freshener my daughter had in her
room.  I've had cats for 20 years and never knew things like those were
toxic (or even attractive) to cats.  After one very bad day where Glory's
chances were 50/50, and two days when we had to force feed her (due to the
mouth ulcers and pain),  and a bottle of antibiotic/steroids over a week's
time,  she's back to her normal self.  She had a one week checkup Monday and
the vet says she's doing terrific.  God bless them, OUR vet didn't charge us
anything for the follow-up visits (only had to pay for the meds) when they
saw the ER clinic charged us $302.
It was an expensive lesson (just like the $400 lesson we had after feeding
our dog too much ham and developing pancreatitis), but luckily this one also
had a happy ending.

Thank you all for your concern and advice and I'm sorry we didn't follow up
with you sooner.  I didn't even know my daughter had made this post until I
was cleaning out my sent box tonight.

Wow.  What an experience!  Live and learn, I guess.  My preference is to
leave nothing out that I wouldn't eat myself.  (Well, that sounds kind of
stupid, but you know what I mean.)  My other preference is to feed only cat
food to cats -- if I had a dog I would follow the dog food rule.  That way
you don't have to be so well informed about what might be toxic.  I'm SO
glad your Glory has come through all right!  Thanks for letting us know.
