Isis likes to spend hours and hours sunbathing and sleeping in her box
underneath an office lamp. In fact, she's there even now.
I came into my office today and took out the trash. When I opened my plastic
trash bag so I could put it in the wastecan it crinkled. Something very
unusual then happened. She got up from a deep kitty coma sleep and zoomed
out of the room.
I've seen this same behavior once in a while with her. At first I thought
maybe somebody in her life abused her or something but I'm beginning to
think this is some kind of Crinkle Phobia.
Do any of you guys have cats who are jumpy and goofy behind the crinkly
sound a plastic trash bag makes???

Is it possible that she ever got caught in the handles of a crinkly plastic
bag......as in completely stuck?
This once happened to my Munchkin girl, and what a bad time of it we both
had! She ripped around the apartment as if the devil himself were at her
heels, and the handles of the bag got wedged extremely tightly around her
middle. I finally managed to trap her against one of the windows - - -she
was so petrified at this 'thing' chasing her, her anal glands let go.
I had to cut the bag lose. If there is a possiblity that something like
this ever happened to your kitty, she may associate that sound with that
occurrence.
and if not......then I am at a loss :)

Well I know for a fact that Texas wasn't tortured with a plastic bag because
I've had him his whole life, but he's still terrified when we put a trash
bag in the trash can. Lexee isn't fond of them either, nor is Puddy. So
maybe my kitties are just as sensitive as Isis and prefer not to share
company with a trash bag. :)

Just when I post my cat has to prove me wrong. ;-) Lexee decided that
she'd rather lay on the bags than listen to me rattle them. ;-)

Maybe there are significant differences in the musical tones associated with
Hefty brand or Wal-Mart brand.
I would stick with the brand your cat loves best!

You're probably right! I think there's a different crinkle factor in a
actual trash bag and a plastic grocery bag. She seems to be in love with
the grocery bags now. I think she's somehow connected that the grocery bags
bring cat food. Forget that I'm the one the feeds her and just bless the
bag! ;-) Typical tortietude I guess.

Quite the opposite here, Mike. Plastic bags are for slobbering on (not
chewing... just gumming enough so it's nice and wet). Playing in, pouncing
on to get the ghost mouse, etc. All bags that are in trash cans or ones
that will be on the floor have their handles cut the minute they come in the
door. The dreaded "I'm caught... OH THE HORROR" happened only once!!

Yes, always - apart from when he crinkles them to wake me up in the morning,
or licks them - dunno why he does that but the noise drives me crazy!

Ok, so we are running the gamut here between "I'm terrified of that crinkly
bag sound - YIPES" to "Yummmmy! I wanna lick that delicious plastic bag to
death" to "This is nature's best ever play toy".
I was hoping for some consistency here like maybe the crinkly sound was
triggering some ancient instinct associated with rustling leaves or
something.
I'd give it all away to spend just one day in Isis' brain.

I've found most cats to be individuals. I've also found they are
inconsistant in their behavior.
Bubba likes to lick plastic bags but he doesn't like it at all when I
change the trash bag (he is also afraid of dust rags and vacuum
cleaners). Midge likes to play with them (she also follows me when I
vacuum). Chauncey only licks them (he's not impressed with the vacuum's
bluster). The Bandit and Chigger couldn't care less about them (they run
flat out to get away from the vacuum, however).
I do think some cats are more nervous than others. Chigger and Bubba
jump at the smallest noise and Midge doesn't even wake up for the same
noise.
