Hi all,

About 5 months ago we received a 5 year old Himalayan cat.  She's just
beautiful,I love her.  My husband is insisting that since the warm weather
is near he wants to have her shaved for two reasons, 1) he thinks she'll
feel cool during the heat & 2) he's tired of seeing her hair everywhere.
Personally I'm totally opposed of shaving her, I've never heard of anyone
who shaved their cat.

My questions:  Is he insane to insist that she be shaved?  Do people really
shave their Himalayan cats?

Thanks,

I wouldn't.  Cats have been living for thousands of years with their fur on.
If she is matted terribly, that's a different story.  My ragdoll-himmy had
her fur on for over 15 years and seemed happy to have it!!!  (Altho' she was
an indoor only prissy little thing...  God, I miss her)..  :(

Yes

Look up "lion cut" and "Himalayan" and you should find some pictures.

Let's look at this logically - cats have fur. They have it for a reason.
Shaving it off would be cruel, plain and simple.

Well it's important to know that when shaving a cat it's not shaving down to
the skin (we're not talking about making a Persian into a Sphynx).  My
Persian came to me shaved last year and went through the summer with a lion
cut.  He actually seemed pretty happy in it.  I'm planning on having him
shaved again so we can start over on his coat and so that he'll be cooler
for the summer.  My cat's 13 y/o and arthritic so I think it's to his
benefit not to have to lug around a heavy coat, plus he's not much for being
groomed around his legs so this will get it under control again.
